How do a landscape designers use photo editing software?

To what extent do they use it?

Photo editing software appears to be a widely used tool in the field of landscape design, but the reality is that not many people actually use it (see also: “The art of landscape design“).

How do they use it?

These examples were all taken from within the last 5 years. The last time I’ve used photo editing software in the landscape design field was more than 10 years ago. I was a lot less knowledgeable about the capabilities of such software back then than I am now.

How do they use it?

1. Make a selection of the things they want to keep in the image

I’m not sure if it’s relevant to this example, but here’s an example of what they did to create this image:

The photo editing software that I’m using in this example is Photoshop, and I did the following to achieve this:

In the main window, I clicked the Eraser tool → clicked on the “Excess” tab, then clicked on the brush.

I clicked on the brush to make a selection out of the excess material.

I clicked on the “Erase” tool, and then on the “Threshold” tool.

I clicked on the “Threshold” tool, and then entered the value 1/2

In the “Excess” palette, I clicked on “Fill Outside“.

2. Fix or improve the image

The image above was created with an iPhone, and the lighting wasn’t ideal, so I used a software that I use for all my images to remove the unwanted shadows with a little adjustment of the brightness.

In short, the best fix for blemishes that you could get away with is to use the “Quick Fix” tool:

I also used the “Fix Details” tool to sharpen up the image:

3. Combine a selection of objects of several different types

The following image was created with an iPhone, and it was a photo of a large flower pot which had been sitting in the sun for a while, and the edges had softened over time. I used the “Smooth” tool (which makes smooth areas, as well as blending areas) to fix the edges by softening them by about 30 percent:

The following image shows the image after I’ve used the “Fix Dust” tool (which takes out most of the brightness of the elements that are too bright):

The “Fix Dust” tool works best for lighter areas that have a lot of reflection, like water, but it also works well for darker areas that have a lot of reflection, like shiny leaves.

5. Reduce the visibility of the reflection

In this example, I applied a “Vignette” filter to the image, and tweaked it a little bit:

I also used the “Sharpen” tool to make the image sharper.

6. Reduce the skewing of the lines in the image

This is another example of a lens flare effect.

I used the “Straighten Camera” tool, and also reduced the amount of distortion by about 8 percent

Finally, I also used the “Sketch” tool to create a digital sketch of the flower pot.

7. Reduce the visibility of movement

How do they use it?

I used the “Eliminate Motion Blur” tool (which reduces the blur of moving objects a little) to remove the blur of the leaves:

8. Adjust the color of the image

The image above was created with an iPhone, and the sunlight was a little too intense, so I used the “Clone Stamp” tool to remove the excess light from the images.

9. Fix the white balance of the image

The following image was created with an iPhone, and the white balance was not ideal. I used the “Color Balance” tool to correct the color balance of the image and increase the vividness of the colors.

I apologize, but it doesn't come my way. Can the variants still exist?
