“Lithops” or Living Stone Plants – A Growers Complete Guide

Many of us like to grow unusual plants, not only do they look great, they also have an air of wonder about them. Nature has this wonderful way of creating plants which survive in every different habitat — this is known as plant adaptation and is a natural phenomenon which has kept me hooked since the start of my career. Their leaf and stem structure of these plants is modified, enabling them to bear the most extreme conditions and thrive. These unusual little plants are native to the dry, arid regions of Southern Africa, where they form a ground-hugging mound.

Lithops is a member of the pebble plant family. Characterized by their flat, windowed appearance, they resemble little stones.

Growing Sedum in Pots

This plant is formed by 1 or 2 pairs of hemispherical leaves separated by a slit and is very fleshy. They are greyish green in color and are dotted with dark spots. These juicy leaves can reach 4 inches in height and exist in two different varieties; the most common being the green ones with dark spots and a stranger variety is the leaves of a violet color. The latter offer flowers separate from the common yellow ones usually seen in Pleiospilos nelii, which are pink in color. These arise solitary through the aperture of the leaves and open afternoon.
