Landscape architecture is fundamentally about creating spaces and places for people. Our approach is site-responsive with a strong focus on achieving environmentally sustainable outcomes, combining creativity and precision to ensure a smooth delivery into built reality. Our approach to urban design stems from a profound interest in exploring and understanding the dynamic of how people experience our cities, towns, neighbourhoods and urban spaces to create spaces and places that influence and inspire people. The essence of good planning lies in the careful management of competing interests and stakeholder opinion to deliver a net community benefit, sustainable land use and positive development outcomes. Curricular emphasis: The Program in Environmental Design emphasizes and promotes cross-disciplinary and collaborative study taking advantage of Boulder's scholarship in the sciences, social sciences, and technology fields. Students enrolled in the undergraduate Environmental Design degree study the physical landscape and built forms along with broader themes including greater sustainability of buildings and cities, global needs for housing, responsible resource management, and adaptation to the impacts of climate change. Research emphasis: Research interests cover a wide variety of topics related to the study of Architecture, Environmental Design, Urban Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, Architectural and Planning Theory and all related fields. There is particular emphasis on interdisciplinary thinking, diverse communities, ecological sustainability, and the built environment's interaction with the natural environment. Environmental and Urban Design

The design and planning of landscapes is an ancient human activity. The Epic of Gilgamesh described the first recorded urban landscape plan c. Intellectuals, builders, priests, royalty, military leaders, poets, slaves, and artists from all over the world have contributed to developing the body of professional knowledge now known as landscape architecture and environmental planning. The practice was formalized in the English-speaking world as landscape gardening in the 17th and 18th centuries. The academic discipline and profession of landscape architecture developed from landscape gardening in the 19th century, as urbanization expanded rapidly. Ideas about the arrangement of landscapes had by that time developed beyond formal geometries to include naturalistic patterns that relied on landscape processes, as well as urban infrastructure and open space systems.

Urban design is both a specialised and an integrating profession. Urban designers are specially trained in the discipline, usually after qualifying as architects and sometimes as planners or landscape architects. The unique focus of urban design lies in the understanding of three-dimensional form and space in cities and settlements, and the relationship of this form to land, context, society, and history. This understanding is firmly rooted in an awareness of nature, landscape, and urbanism and consideration of the needs and dynamics of society, economy, and space. Urban design is as much process as product and the implementation of urban design proposals requires knowledge and skill in decision-making techniques and structures. The art of urban design lies in shaping the interaction between people and places, environment and urban form, nature, and built fabric and influencing processes that lead to the development of successful cities, towns, and villages.

Urban design impacts on the quality, sustainability and success of planning policies, planning applications, regeneration projects and growth strategies. Landscape architecture today enjoys greater potential for educational interchange with other design fields such as urban design and architecture than at any time in its history. As a design medium that positively contributes to the complexities of the contemporary city and to a more equitable distribution of ecological and environmental resources, landscape architecture in urban design education is examined through its role in the creation of civic spaces and their natural and built urban character. Case studies are introduced that explore two joint design studies in urban design led jointly by the author and Professor Kim Seiyong with students from Korea University and Harvard University Graduate School of Design. A main urban district undergoing rapid transformation in Seoul, Republic of Korea, forms the study area, where opportunities for integration of landscape architecture and urban design medium, methods and expression are explored through student projects in a range of localised, natural and constructed site conditions.
