How to create outdoor living spaces in parks and public areas

We had a fantastic time with landscape management &, design inc. and their talented team in the beautiful city of New Haven. In my last blog, I wrote about the planning stages of the garden. Now, I would like to cover the planting process, how to create outdoor living spaces in parks and public areas, and how to work with the elements to make a garden.

When planning a park, most people focus on the trees, and rightly so. Trees and other woody vegetation improve water quality, stabilize soil and create a habitat for wildlife. We also can improve the overall aesthetics of the park, whether that is simply adding color and interest, to providing people with shade, views or places to sit and relax.

In the above photo, we have a beautiful park. One of the things I really enjoyed about it was the trees, along with the other park features. The photo is the second I took in the park, but the first photo shows a close up of the trees. The close up gave me a better idea of how I wanted to grow them. In my plan, I had intended to use a trellis, with some of the tree branches that went down, to use as planters. At that time, I wanted to wait until the tree branches grew into the trellis, but since then I have changed my mind. It is too late to plant the tree branches, but I can plant the tree trunk and branch to grow into the trellis. This gives me the opportunity to plant something in that close up area. Alyssa and her team, and the designers, worked with me to create the trellis. It not only creates a focal point in the plan, but also has an appeal that makes it much easier to maintain.

So what is best for the park? I like the idea of the plants, as they are part of the landscaping design and add interest and beauty. That is why the planters are so important in the design. They add variety to the design, allowing people to sit, relax and enjoy the environment. It is a design which I am delighted with, but there is room for improvement. The main problems with the design are,

The plants are growing in such a manner that it is hard to access them for any maintenance, even when you stand next to the planter.

It is too late to plant some of the planters, but there is room for expansion, where the tree planter can be moved further back, creating a more open area.

It would be good if there was some sort of maintenance tool to keep the plants watered and cared for.

In the garden, we are not limited by the time-frame. Our design has the potential to keep changing, as the seasons change. The planters can also change, adding something new or changing the style of the planter. For the garden, I am looking for a design which is easy to access, but which is not easily damaged by foot traffic. The design will not take shape for at least a year or so. We are also looking forward to working with the design team to see if we can make any changes to the design.

The planter can be moved back, as much as we need to. If we need to adjust for height differences, or make room for a bench, that can be done too. So the design will change, depending on how the garden will change. I'm working on adding in some other design and planting ideas.

I am not exactly an interior designer, I started making things with cardboard, wood and wire and then moved on to clay. I really love making and making the things that I own. I am interested in woodworking, making things out of wire, pottery and ceramics. I will be making some wooden benches for my planters. If I would like to post a picture, I will do that, I just have not been doing that.

The bench is not all that I am making. My dad has been letting me use some of his old tools. I want to build a table which will be the centre point for my planters. It will be the place for my plants to sit. My mom has taken all the tools out of my grandpa's garage to use for this project. I made a list of things I want to build, the table is at the top of the list. I also have plans to make shelves. If I want to get specific with the size of the table, I will have to make that adjustment.

I plan to add other things, maybe a garden shed, planters, plant stands. The bench I am building I want to make for myself, which means I have to make sure that I make it for me. The size, shape and the color will be mine.

I plan to post pictures as I go. I also plan to show how the bench comes together. My dad has built it the old fashion way, but I think it can be made in a way that makes it a lot easier. This project is a learning experience and I will post pictures of what I have done. I plan to use pictures, so I do not have to try and draw in the right measurements for the bench or any of the parts of it. I also hope that I will learn a thing or two along the way.

If you want to have a link back, feel free, but please ask first. I am still working on that process and I think a blog link would be helpful for those who like to blog but do not want to do the hassle of creating one themselves.

If you want to keep up with my posts, feel free to click on the link for this blog. I will try to update this site as often as I can with the latest project as I am working on it.
