LET'S TALK ABOUT THE OLD GEOLOGICAL SITES TO PRESERVE THEIR MEMORY

THE TERRITORIAL CONTEXT OF THE TAGGHJATE

THE COMPLEX OF MONTE BELVEDERE-SANT'ELIA-MONTEDORONE THE MUNICIPALITIES OF SAN GIORGIO JONICO, ROCCAFORZATA AND FAGGIANO

(edited by: Prof. G.nni Carafa)

ETHNO-GASTRONOMY AND LOCAL RECEPTIVITY

For some time the Sangiorgese community, also due to the employment emergency, has registered some timid but qualified organizational-tourist-accommodation presence on its territory accompanied by an acrid rediscovery of its most genuine peasant culinary tradition, therefore, a real race ethno-gastronomy that can be found even more in the private family fabric.

THE OVENS

Fumarole

With a long family tradition, the “Fumarola” oven, in Via Cadorna, offers a very rich variety of local and non-savory bread-making, savory and sweet which, particularly in the early morning, can be observed in its entire production display. Only as a mere indication - on the basis of my personal memories of childhood preference - I point out: Le frisèlle - in jargon: li frisèdde - (very particular rings, like toasted bread, to be enjoyed, preferably as a snack, after a very short softening in water, with a simple squeeze of seasonal tomato, oil and salt), the pùcce (of oriental origin: like Arab bread, cooked on the so-called "flame": sudden very high temperature reached by the oven following the introduction of the traditional dry olive frond - the so-called “stròma” -); it was tasted fresh from the oven with a filling of peperonata (the so-called, Skàkkiàta, or other ...) e. again, taralli al vino (sugar and white or red wine), bread with withered black olives ("dead" olives), taralli with oil and fennel, lu Fucazzièddu (homemade focaccia, thick and riddled with cherry tomatoes on the surface or stuffed with onions or lampasciùni: wild onions), castagnette (type, cocoa biscuit balls, coated with icing), peaches etc.

All that remains is to be spoiled for choice, gluttony permitting.

St. George

Located in via Diaz, it is a recently opened oven born from a rib of the aforementioned Fumarola bakery. It is equally assorted and coveted by the villagers.

For the country there are other bakeries that equally well-known their business even if limited to a traditionally more essential product.

THE LOCAL FRUIT AND VEGETABLES

Of family production and, therefore, with limited availability, it is possible to see here and there in front of the houses, in some garages or in the street (street vendors), a very rich variety of vegetables, vegetables and seasonal fruit (tomatoes, peppers, fennel and celery, catalògna, wild chicory, rocket, Ferrovia cherries, figs, fioroni, peaches, plums, percòche, pagghjòtte, cucumbers, watermelons, watermelons, yellow melons, cardinal grapes, Italy, vràca grapes, etc.). In short, living there, one forgets the existence of meats that in the peasant tradition were limited to the possibilities offered only by domestic breeding (chickens, rabbits ...).

RESTAURANTS AND ACCOMMODATION

It is somewhat variously widespread in the country. There is an abundance of pizzerias that are often truly authentic. All, however, offer as traditional street food the renowned panzeròtto (type, fried calzone) stuffed - the traditional one - with tomato, mozzarella and basil leaf or anchovy and capers.

The Trattoria al Castello

For the real local (ethnic) cuisine, however, one must refer, in the village, to the Antica Trattoria al Castello - located in Via P.G. Gypsy City, right near the D'Ayala Castle - which has specialized in offering dishes from the memory of grandmothers: you just have to try it to believe it, maybe get direct advice from the manager himself.

The restaurant has also annexed a small accommodation with a bad and breakfast character, therefore, a sure local point of support.

The Monte Belvedere restaurant, former radio station

Located inside the former Radio Station MM .. - on Monte Belvedere, along the S.P. no. 111 for Roccaforzata - offers a quality restaurant service. Its very special breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding is suitable for enchanting summer evenings outdoors in the most absolute natural coolness.

The San Giovanni tourist village

As already mentioned, it is the structure derived from the homonymous former Masseria S. Giovanni; its architectural complex, luxuriously renovated, offers a complete and valuable tourist-hotel service, the real pride of the area. The manager is always kindly available for any eventuality and advice, even in terms of eno-ethno gastronomy, all that remains is to trust his consummate experience in the sector.

The Montefusco Estate

It too offers an accommodation service as well as, it seems, also in terms of farm holidays.
