Eschsholzia is a compact plant native to North America, belonging to the Poppy family. Hence its second name is the California poppy. She received the popular name of sagebrush because of the similarity of leaves with wormwood. In Russia, the flower is grown as an annual, but thanks to its self-seeding ability, it can delight with its flowering for years. The plant propagates by seed. Usually, the process of growing echscholzia from seeds is not particularly difficult, but some of the nuances are still worth paying attention to.

Main types and varieties with photos

Escholzia will be an incredible decoration for any garden, flower bed or balcony thanks to the interesting shape of the leaves and beautiful inflorescences. It goes well with other plants and is often used in wedding bouquets.

In total, there are about 10 types of flowers in the genus, but in Russia there are only three varieties of escholzia:

  • Soddy.
  • Lobby.
  • California.

Eshsholzia turfy

An annual plant, which is a dense bush about 15 cm high. The flowers are medium-sized, up to 3 cm in diameter, lemon or bright yellow in color. The small size allows you to grow a flower both in an open area and at home in a pot. Flowering is abundant and long - from the first days of June until the first frost.

Eschsholzia Lobba

An annual plant that prefers open space. The maximum height of the bush is 20 cm. The flowers are single yellow-orange flowers with a square shape of petals, and their size does not exceed 2.5 cm in diameter. Escholzia Lobba blooms in July and pleases with its flowers until the end of September.

Eschsholzia california

A perennial plant that is grown as an annual in the middle zone of our country. The bush up to 45 cm in height has a straight and highly branched stem, on which silvery-green openwork leaves are located, in appearance resembling wormwood.

This is the most popular type of plant among florists. With the help of selection, various varieties and hybrids with double or simple corollas and all kinds of colors were bred:

  • cream;
  • purple;
  • white;
  • pink;
  • red and others.

A compact perennial that grows up to 25 cm in height. Inflorescences can be either double or semi-double with wavy petals of various shades.

The plant loves a lot of light and heat, but is resistant to frost down to -5 ° C. He does not tolerate transplanting, therefore he prefers sowing immediately to a permanent place.

Apple blossom

The variety is distinguished by its unpretentiousness, large double buds of deep pink color and high growth up to 35 cm. Suitable for growing both in pots and in a flower bed and does not depend on the fertility of the soil. Feels great in open areas and in partial shade.

Flowering begins in May and continues until frost. It is grown both by seedlings and by sowing in open ground before winter.

Russian size gold

The main difference between the variety is large and one hundred percent double flowers with corrugated petals. The plant has a developed root system, therefore it tolerates drought well, without requiring frequent watering.

Escholzia blooms in May. An adult plant produces many seeds that sprout on their own the next year.

Cherry whirlwind

The peculiarity of this variety is in bright double colors with a double color - ruby petals, which turn yellow closer to the center. The bush is compact in size, growing up to 25 cm in height.

The delicate silvery leaves create a unique contrast against the vibrant blossoms.

Secrets of seed growing and optimal timing

Escholzia propagates exclusively by seeds. It can be sown both in the fall directly into the open ground, and in the spring to obtain seedlings.

Although the wormwood is not particularly capricious, it is nevertheless necessary to take into account some of the nuances of seed breeding:

  • Seeds must be stratified before planting. This procedure involves creating a cold and humid environment for better seed germination. To do this, it is enough to put the seeds of the plant on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator for a month.
  • If sowing is carried out in the fall in open ground, then stratification is not necessary, since this will happen naturally. Spring sowing in the ground should not exclude this manipulation.
  • Due to the excessive fragility of the root system, picking, that is, planting seedlings in separate containers, should be completely excluded.

According to the lunar calendar, favorable dates for sowing seeds for seedlings are from 10 to 16 March. Unfavorable terms - from 5 to 7 March and 21 March.

Sowing rules in open ground

You can sow seeds in open ground in both autumn and spring. Autumn sowing is more preferable, since the conditions for seed growth are as close to natural as possible.

Benefits of October sowing:

  • Natural stratification.
  • Friendly emergence of seedlings.
  • Early flowering.
  • Easy process of planting and caring for plants.

Spring sowing is carried out in April and after 10-15 days the first shoots appear. But unlike the autumn, this method delays the appearance of buds for a whole month.

Regardless of the method of planting seeds, it is important to carry out preparatory manipulations:

  • Site preparation. For good health and abundant flowering of escholzia, you need to choose a sunny area where moisture does not stagnate.
  • Soil preparation. An important condition is the weak acidity of the soil, as well as the high conductivity of moisture and air. The land should be fertile and preferably sandy. You can do this yourself - in the soil on which the flower will grow, you need to add sand at the rate of 3-5 kg per one m² and peat - 2-3 kg per one m². The soil must be well dug to a depth of 20 cm and leveled a week before planting.

The process of planting seeds in open soil:

  1. In dry or slightly damp soil, you need to make grooves up to 8 cm deep.
  2. Mix the seeds with sand to exclude dense emergence of seedlings, and sow along the entire length of the groove.
  3. Smooth out the grooves and cover with dry leaves, sawdust or peat.
  4. After germination, the seedlings must be thinned in such a way that a gap of at least 20 cm remains between them.

Growing seedlings

With the seedling method of breeding, an important condition is to prevent injury to the root system during transplanting seedlings into open ground. This must be taken into account already at the stage of sowing seeds. Therefore, it is advisable to use peat tablets, collapsible or disposable cups in order to plant the plant together with the ground in the future. Otherwise, there is a high probability of the death of the seedling.

Otherwise, growing escholzia by seedling is no different from growing other plants. For this you need:

  1. Disinfect the seeds with a solution of potassium permanganate or fungicides, and also treat them with growth stimulants to improve germination.
  2. Place the peat tablets in a large plastic container and pour water into it.
  3. After the tablets have absorbed all the water and swell, the remaining water must be drained.
  4. Using a damp toothpick, place one or two Escholzia seeds in each peat tablet.
  5. Sprinkle with a millimeter layer of sifted peat.
  6. Moisten the soil from above with a spray bottle.
  7. Cover the container with cling film or glass and place in a warm, bright place, hidden from direct sunlight.

Before the first shoots appear, the container must be ventilated and moistened in time, preventing the soil from drying out. The seeds will sprout within two weeks. And after another 20 days, you can apply a complex fertilizer in a weak concentration to feed the sprouts.

2-3 weeks before planting seedlings in an open area, you need to carry out a hardening procedure. At first, you can leave the seedlings under an open window for a few minutes. In the future, it needs to be taken out to the balcony, gradually increasing the time spent in the fresh air from 30 minutes to 4 hours.

Transplant and care in the open field

The transplant of the escholzia to an open space is carried out with the arrival of warm weather. The optimum air temperature is considered to be 18–22 ° C above zero.

Preparing the land before planting seedlings is no different from that before sowing seeds directly into the ground. Further it is necessary:

  1. Make holes up to 20 cm deep, keeping a 30 cm gap between them.
  2. Trying not to damage the earthen lump, plant the seedlings in the holes.
  3. Fill the voids with soil and compact the soil around the seedling.
  4. Water the seedlings with a watering can.

To ensure the well-being of young plants and stimulate abundant flowering, you need to follow some simple care guidelines:

  • Watering. Eschsholzia is resistant to moisture deficiency. It is necessary to water it only in case of dry summer and then no more than twice a month.
  • Top dressing. The introduction of a complex fertilizer, rich in potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen, is carried out twice - during planting of seedlings on the site and a month after that. With the appearance of the first buds, the procedure should not be carried out.
  • Loosening. Eschsholzia is in dire need of regular loosening of the soil, since the low air permeability of the soil leads to the death of the plant.

Growing an escholzia from seeds is a simple and very interesting activity, so even a novice gardener can cope with it. Sowing seeds directly into open ground will not cause any problems. Growing seedlings will require more effort, but following all the recommendations will certainly lead to a positive result.

Growing escholzia from seeds: photo of flowers, when to plant

A beautiful garden cannot be imagined without flowers. Usually, flower beds are decorated with perennial and annual plants that bloom at different times. Among the many delicate and fragrant flowers, gardeners prefer unpretentious types of ornamental plants to care for.

Escholzia belongs to this category of flowers, which, with its long flowering, will revive any flower bed. What is this type of flowers? How to grow escholzia from seeds, what are the requirements for caring for it?

Preparing a flower bed before sowing

If you decide to decorate your flower bed with an "apple blossom", then first you need to properly prepare it. You will need to do the following step by step:

  1. Choose a bright and sunny area. Depending on the variety, escholzia can be made the central flower in a flower bed or sown on curbs. Its color period lasts all summer.
  2. The growing soil should be light, breathable and absorbent. Mix the soil with sand yourself if necessary, making it more crumbly.
  3. The acidity reaction should be weak. Pure wood ash or dolomite flour can even out this indicator.
  4. Dig the flower bed to a depth of 20 centimeters. Remove weed roots. There is no need to fertilize the soil, it is enough just to balance its composition.
  5. When sowing in autumn, you will need to have additional mulching material or collected fallen leaves.
  6. After digging the flower bed, you need to make grooves about 2 centimeters deep on it. Since the flower seeds are very small, for sowing convenience and in order to combat waterlogging, it is necessary to mix them with coarse sand.

If you have chosen sowing in spring, then after sowing the grooves should be sprinkled with peat. In autumn, sowing is carried out dry, but the flowerbed must be covered with fallen leaves or other mulching material (large sawdust, crushed bark or needles).

How to plant escholzia correctly

Each flower lives only 3-4 days

In order to get flowering already in early June, it is necessary to plant seeds for seedlings in late March - early April. The best option would be to land in peat tablets. Initially, they need to be soaked for a few minutes, and after the peat swells, drain the excess liquid. Peat tablets are placed either in separate containers - this will make it easier to transplant seedlings into the ground, or in one common container for ease of watering and maintenance.

It is important to remember that in this case it is necessary to use not only peat, but also a nutrient mixture.

Use tweezers or a toothpick to make a depression in the center of the tablet and place 1-2 Escholtia seeds in it. After that, sprinkle with a small, about 1-2 mm, layer of soil and spray from a spray bottle. You can cover the top with glass or polyethylene to create a mini greenhouse. Maintain moderate soil moisture and ventilate seedlings to avoid rotting. After the shoots appear, the cover is removed and moved to a well-lit room with a temperature of about 18 ° C.

If necessary, you can use additional lighting, thereby providing seedlings with 12-16 hours of daylight hours.

But a more interesting and less troublesome way to grow Californian poppy is to plant seeds in the ground in October with the beginning of the first frost. No matter how we worry, these seeds will not die from frost, but on the contrary, they will be better prepared for germination. It is necessary to choose a dry, sunny place for a flower garden with sandy soil. The seeds are not planted very deeply, and then covered with a thick layer of fallen leaves (mulched) to protect them from severe frosts and retain moisture. During the winter, the so-called process of seed stratification takes place - the dense shell softens, and as a result they will germinate even faster than those planted in spring. All that remains is to thin out frequent shoots in order to get strong plants as a result.

Stratification can also be simulated at home. In the fall, they put the seeds in the refrigerator on the lower shelf, and in the spring they will be ready for planting.
