Peony is a gorgeous fragrant flower that decorates any flower garden and looks great in flower arrangements and festive bouquets. The most popular breeding method for this plant is by dividing the bush. The method of propagation by seeds is most often used in the work of breeders when developing new varieties. One significant drawback of this method is that the first flowering of peonies grown from seeds does not occur until the fifth year of the plant's life. Knowing and taking into account all the subtleties of seed propagation of this flowering culture, you can get the desired result without special experience in floriculture.

Peony seeds features

The process of germinating peony seeds takes a long time and requires a lot of patience, since their embryo has a special structure. The first seedlings can appear only a year after sowing the seeds, because the seeds need a two-stage stratification. To speed up this process, experienced florists recommend using only seeds collected in their area for planting. The optimal time for collecting planting material is from August 15 to September 15. At this time, the seeds are not yet fully ripe, which is very important for their further use.

The collected seed material must be immediately planted on flower beds, deepening it into the soil by 5 cm. This planting allows the seeds to go through two stages of stratification. The first warm stage is being in soil with a temperature of 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. The second cold stage is being in the soil with a temperature of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius for 1.5-2 months (before the onset of winter cold weather). Having passed this "treatment", most of the seeds will germinate the next season, and the rest - in another year.

Seed Germination Tips

In order to speed up the process of the appearance of seedlings from seeds, you need to know a few secrets about the stratification procedure from experienced breeders and professional florists.

The thermal stage of stratification will be of better quality if the peony seeds are exposed to variable temperatures throughout the day. In the daytime it is 25-30 degrees, at night - about 15.

At the cold stage of stratification, it is necessary to perform several additional laborious manipulations that will speed up the germination of seeds for a whole year.

It is very important that roots appear in the peony seeds at the heat stage. Only after their appearance can one proceed to the cold stage. The procedure will require a growth regulator (gibberellic acid solution), which is recommended to treat the hypocotyl by applying a bandage soaked in the prepared solution. To do this, you will need to open the seeds, apply a "bandage" to a specific area of the stem and cover them with a glass or plastic cap for about 7 days. During this time (at a temperature of 5 to 10 degrees Celsius and constant humidity), the seedlings will have a bud, after which they can be transferred to a room with a temperature of 15 to 20 degrees Celsius for further development.

The procedure can be repeated if, after a week, the growth bud on the seeds has not formed.

Germination of purchased peony seeds

Before sowing, purchased seeds must be poured with warm water and left for two days to soak, which will contribute to their quickest hatching. For winter sowing of seeds, you will need a heating pad with a temperature controller and flat dishes with wet sand. The dishes with the sown seeds are placed on a heating pad and warmed up in stages: in the daytime - up to 30 degrees, and at night - up to 15. This heat treatment continues for a month. Watering is carried out regularly by spraying sand from a fine spray.

You can proceed to the second stage (cold) after the roots appear on the seeds. First, the seed is transplanted into fertile soil (into another container), and then the temperature is maintained from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius until the first leaves appear. The final stage of growing peony seedlings is to maintain room temperature in the growing room and timely moisten the soil before transferring the seedlings to a permanent place (to open beds) from about 15 to 30 August.

It is quite possible to grow a peony from seeds

Tree peony: growing successfully from seed

Every gardener is capable of growing a tree peony from seeds, but you need to have knowledge and patience.
In the event that the tree peony is grown from seed, it will more easily tolerate the climatic features of a particular region and the microclimate of your garden. And also this hardy plant does not require any extraordinary efforts in preparation for winter.

I sowed the seeds of tree peonies collected after ripening immediately into the open ground. And in the coming spring, I saw with regret: one, maximum two plants (out of 30-40 pieces of sown seeds) have sprung up. The next year I found 2-3 more peony sprouts in this place - that's all.

Then I decided to try to sow the tree peony in a different way, having previously processed the seeds before sowing.

Why is growing from seed rarely used?

This method of growing popular flowers is rarely used. Even knowing how to grow peonies from seeds, most gardeners prefer to propagate plants by dividing the bush. Why? There is a simple explanation for this.

Usually gardeners, purchasing peonies for their site, focus on the beauty of flowers. Therefore, they select hybrids bred by breeders. But the latter have one significant drawback - the preservation of the type of flowers is possible only when dividing the bush.

At the same time, it must be admitted that in amateur gardening, the purity of the variety is not so important in comparison with the beauty. The overwhelming majority of seedlings obtained from seeds pleases the owners with very interesting results. Knowing how to grow peonies from seeds, you can propagate wild-growing flowers. These include dodging and thin-leaved species.

Reproduction of peonies by seeds is not always possible for objective reasons - some varieties never bear fruit, they simply do not have seeds. These include Marchal MacMahon, Madame Forel, Celestial, Montblanc. In part, this applies to lactic-flowered and terry varieties, which have few seeds.

You should know that if you have collected seeds, then the plant you grow will resemble the parent bush very distantly. The main varietal characteristics, especially the brightness of the flower shade and the doubleness of the petals, will disappear. Nobody says that flowers will grow ugly, they just will be different. In addition, to see and evaluate the result of your work, you will have to wait at least five years.

Reproduction of peonies by seeds will require special skills from the grower. This is a laborious and rather complicated procedure with many features. But according to flower growers, all difficulties, long waiting for results, inconveniences are more than compensated for when you see flowers bred on your own.

Further care of seedlings

The bulbs obtained from the seeds are planting material that is already familiar to everyone and is handled as usual. As you know, hyacinths are planted in the soil in autumn, covered with a thick layer of straw or similar material.

Before planting, the bulbs can be treated with a fungicide, after all, hyacinths are a little capricious and prone to disease. In the spring, after germination, the flowers must be fed.

It should be remembered that plants grown from seeds bloom only after 4-6 years - this is a long way that requires time and patience.

But on the other hand, the resulting hyacinths, as a rule, do not inherit maternal traits, that is, it is quite possible to obtain a completely new, unusual variety of a flower. This is what attracts breeders and enthusiastic gardeners to seed reproduction. If it is possible to grow a really new type of exquisite flower, then in the future it is propagated by the usual, bulbous method.

To move the peony to another place, in September, dig it in a circle, stepping back from the base of the stems 25-30 cm. Use a garden pitchfork to loosen and pull the bush out of the soil. The further procedure is as follows:

  • Shake the rhizome from the ground, wash it under running water and leave it in the fresh air.
  • Cut the aerial part of the plant almost to the root.
  • Use a sharp knife to shorten thick old roots to 10–15 cm, cutting angle - 45 °.
  • Hammer a wooden wedge into the center of the old rhizome so that it splits into several pieces. If rotten areas are found inside the old roots, clean them with a knife and sprinkle with crushed coal.
  • Each division, which has a fragment of the root collar and 3-4 healthy eyes, is planted in pre-prepared pits. Try to get medium sized dividers. Small parts of the rhizome may die, and large ones do not take root well and get sick for a long time.

Three to four-year-old peonies that have already bloomed are subject to repotting with division. Thanks to the procedure, the bushes remain young and the quality of their flowering does not decrease.

In the spring, peonies are divided and transplanted only in case of emergency, and be prepared for the fact that the stressed plant will not bloom this season.

Growing tree peonies - advice and reviews from readers

My tree peonies

I grow my beauties in partial shade, then I have to water less.

In the spring, before flowering, I water the plants with ash infusion (1 tbsp / bucket of water) - once every 2-3 weeks. Foliar dressing ("Kemira-Lux", "Intrasal" I dissolve in water according to the instructions) I give during the growth of buds, then the size of the flower will increase.

At the same time, I mulch the trunks with compost or loose humus - this is both top dressing and preservation of moisture in the soil.

At the end of summer and at the beginning of autumn, I water and feed the peonies twice - once under the root, another - over the leaves. For root dressing, I use mullein infusion (1:10), but I am afraid to give the infusion of bird droppings, they say that the peony may die.

I spray the bushes with a solution of trace elements (according to the instructions).

In October, under the bushes, I pour a mixture of rotted deciduous sawdust mixed with compost soil.

Then, for the winter, I sprinkle the peonies with earth to a height of about 5 cm and cover them with dry leaves, spruce branches. It is only important not to forget to remove the layers of the "pie" in the spring.

I prune peonies in the spring, shortening each shoot to the first living bud.

I propagate them by dividing the bush, digging up in September, sometimes I do this in early spring. When planting, I make sure that the root collar does not go deep, so I leave it just above the soil. Then, when the earth settles (I pour the planting mixture into the hole), it turns out to be at the right level. When planted deeply (the root collar is too low), peonies do not bloom for a long time.

Can be propagated by seeds, better freshly harvested and sown before winter. They germinate in a year, and the first flowering occurs in 3 years.

This powerful deciduous shrub with flowers of bright and outstanding beauty can rightfully take the place of the earliest flowering perennial in our gardens. In order for a tree-like peony to show itself in all its glory, it is necessary to carefully approach the choice of a variety, strictly follow the rules of agricultural technology and take time to prepare plants for wintering

Treelike peonies bloom earlier than herbaceous ones. So, in the Moscow region, flowers are released in the last decade of May. Surprise and admire not only the shape, aroma, but also the size of the flowers. Terry flowers the size of a plate on strong peduncles and in the height of summer are rare, but here such beauty is at the time of lilies of the valley and the first lilacs.

The picture of extraordinary luxury of tree-like peonies is completed by groups of varieties of yellow and purple colors ('Kamata Fuji', 'Kamata Nishiki', 'Daifuji Nishiki')which is absent in herbaceous peonies. The yellow varieties are the latest, they bloom closer to the beginning of July. Their dense, velvety petals do not fade in the sun and “glow” at dusk.

In the selection and breeding of tree peonies, Japan is in the lead. An unconditional achievement of breeders is the breeding of varieties with a strong peduncle that does not droop under the weight of inflorescences, which was typical

Large-flowered varieties of tree-like peonies of Japanese selection, even in temperate climates, winter successfully and are able to form inflorescences up to 2 S cm in diameter. Each flower lives for about 5 days (in hot weather a little less), but since the buds bloom alternately, and on a ten-year-old plant there can be about a hundred flowers, the flowering of the bush is quite long.

ala Chinese and old French varieties. Also, their pride is terry and semi-double tree peonies, most of which are decorated with an elegant golden mean. Flowers amaze with beauty and completeness of form, perfection of proportions and size. Modern varieties are characterized by light flowers, consisting of many silky petals with a variety of color transitions.

Frost will not kill a peony

Treelike peonies winter stably in the middle lane, but, being early flowering, they enter the phase of active growth already in April. In May, all the buds start to grow, opening the leaves and showing the buds, their only enemy at this time is the May frost. When the temperature drops to 0 ° C, the plants can freeze over, but do not panic. Cut the plants to a tree stump, up to living buds. On the root collar of an adult plant, there are many renewal buds, they "wake up", and thanks to the powerful root system, the plant not only fully recovers over the summer, but also blooms.

Growing peonies from seeds at home is a laborious and lengthy process, therefore, in most cases, gardeners prefer to get offspring by simple methods (dividing the bush, cuttings or layering). If you make an effort and grow bushes from seeds, you can really get new unique varieties with unusual color of flowers. Such plants will be more resistant to adverse weather conditions.
