Even a shallow pond can pose a threat to young children. Therefore, it is important to turn the dacha into a safe place, especially an open body of water.

Decorative fence

A small fence about 80 cm high will be an excellent barrier for a curious child. To prevent the baby from climbing over, give up the curly details on the hedge, which can be used as steps. Better make it solid, then the young researcher, if he wants to, will not be able to move to the other side. A gate is important for a decorative pond fence, which closes securely. For this, use a lock that cannot be opened without a key.

Temporary fencing

If you don't want protective structures, use temporary barriers. These can be installed before the arrival of children at the dacha. It is easier to dig several small depressions near the water and insert supports for a temporary fence or net into them. Do not forget that such a fence should be at least 80 cm in height, and have a securely closing gate. If you choose to use a grid, go for the fine mesh option.

Surround with a flower bed

The wide coastal flower beds also make the pond safe for children. It is important to choose plants with a densely growing crown, without thorns, non-poisonous species. The flower bed can be made wet or swampy, then the kids will not have a desire to climb into it. If it is not possible to surround with vegetation around the entire perimeter, install small fences (part of the fence). The best place for them would be a small gap between two densely growing shrubs.

Decorative grille

Sometimes the lattice, which covers the pond from above, does not seem to be the most aesthetic solution, but it provides maximum safety. To make it fit well into the style of the summer cottage, order art forging with unusual curls and monograms. Note that this option is suitable for small ponds - a metal lattice large size will be difficult to dismantle and install. Even if the described measures seem inconvenient, do not neglect them. Only in this way will you be able to protect children who have come to stay at the dacha from danger.

Protective mesh

A special net is another way to make the pond safe for children. It stretches underwater as close to its surface as possible, so a child who falls on it will not drown or even have time to be frightened. A protective mesh can be ordered from a water supply store. The size is selected based on the size of the reservoir, which you need to know. Then all that remains is to install it. The best option is a mesh with a mesh size of 5 cm, made of galvanized wire.

Ponds, streams

A film or a rigid plastic mold reliably protects the soil of the coastal zone from water poured into the pond, so here you can use any plants in the design, not only those that need it.

Having a natural pond with water lilies, algae, fish in the country is troublesome. Pond maintenance can be a joy if you know the nuances that can reduce the labor intensity of the work.

Setting up a garden in a wetland is troublesome. It is clear that you cannot arrange it without draining it. Such sites are found on high moss sphagnum bogs and on low-lying cereal-sedge bogs, as well.

There are several ways to arrange the shore of your artificial pond. If you don’t need to worry about the safety of children, there is a wide range of ideas to create around.

Any raised structure in the garden with a flat surface will add charm to the garden. At the same time, a pond or a raised body of water will always look especially attractive. To make such a structure.

A raised artificial pond in a garden is different from a pond that is flush with the ground. Ponds in courtyards are often built on an elevated position. On their edges you can sit and.

Nothing can add style and grace to a garden like a touch of severity, and this is not so difficult to achieve. Practical advice. There are not many paving options available to create.

Most water structures have little chance to appear natural, as they are squeezed into a garden shed or fence, flowing under a tree, next to a garage, and other similar ones.

Ditches and Streams Although ditches and streams are man-made, they can be made "natural", natural in appearance. The butyl lining should be stretched from one end to the other all the way through.

How to make a large island If the space and length of the reservoir allows, then you can create islands of a more bizarre shape, which should be laid out at the bottom of the reservoir, building the lower part from.

If you are bored with how your pond looks, then why not equip it with an island? While very small bodies of water look ridiculous with an even tinier island in the middle, many are.

A few tips on how to attract the inhabitants to your water garden It is not difficult to lure the inhabitants into the garden, and quite often someone already lives there, but a properly arranged pond can attract quite enough.

How to build uninterrupted working pools, weirs and cascades. If there is a sloppy structure in the garden, then most often it is a water structure. Often the lining is visible as well.

"Invisible" lining of a decorative pond. Lining is essential for any pond. Here are some surefire ways to hide visible PVC or butyl lining around the edge of a pond More often.

You can make your pond safe for guests and unattractive for uninvited animals. A large pond certainly requires close attention from the owner. If the pond is large enough,.

When there are a lot of baths, and there are almost no stones, it becomes difficult to decorate the banks of the decorative pond. And then there is a way to save stones: steel can be made from cast-iron containers.

The first thing to do is to determine the place for the future slide. And above all, it should be as safe as possible, that is, be at the maximum distance from the roadway, sewer hatches, various drains, reservoirs, trees, thickets of thorny bushes and other traumatic objects.

Further, this place should be spacious enough so that you can freely walk up to the slide and leave it. Moreover, the higher the slide, and the better the ice on it, the more free space will be required to ride without fear.

How to make a pond for Koi in the country - the most advanced Koi pond, part 1

Here I want to share how we built a concrete pond that will last forever, protect Koi in the harshest winters, provide ease of use and beautify your home.

We have expanded our living space outside and are able to use the pond all year round. The pond fits seamlessly into a small courtyard, is of visual interest and emits the soothing sounds of running water. Sitting on the ledge, you can sit and stare into the Koi pond and entertain your guests.

This project took several weeks to complete. You can see in the photos how many other projects and options for the construction of our new yard were. Moderate construction skills and knowledge are required to complete this project, and by no means should you be an “expert”. The most difficult aspect is creating concrete forms and structures and knowing how to properly install them.

This Instructable can be adopted and used directly, or ideas and methods can be changed by their own changes in this design. Good luck and enjoy! !

Step 1: Some information about Koi ponds

Koi ponds

I want to go over some of the basics of building a pond for Koi. I did a lot of research before I started designing and building our pond. I have found many myths about Koi and I want to dispel some of them here. Koi are beautiful fish (carp family) that can live for many years with proper care. The better you build a habitat for them, the longer they will live. As you will see, water quality is a key factor in maintaining healthy Koi.

Myth 1. Koi are expensive fish.

It's true, there are Koi that cost thousands of dollars. Most are $ 20 or so or more. You don't really need a lot of fish after we found out they breed like crazy. So, only buy a few to get started. I recommend buying from a farm rather than just as a pet or from a pet store. You will get the best quality fish in terms of health and often cheaper from the Koi breeder. Talking to the breeder will give you a lot more knowledge of Koi, and learn about all the different types and colors.

Myth 2. Koi ponds should be large.

"The general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per 10 liters of water."

You can make a pond of any size, but you must be careful in small, overcrowded ponds. I've often heard people say: Koi in ponds only grow to a certain size, which depends on how big your pond is. It's a lie. As long as you have healthy fish, quality food and clean water for them, they will grow to any size. The more you feed them, the more they will grow, these fish eat non-stop. But keep in mind that you have to determine what is right for you and your pond, such as how many fish you would like to have. Due to self-breeding, there will probably be more than you intend.

Usually Koi carp ponds should be at least 4000 liters (ours is about 8000 liters). Ideally, you can change the water twice a year (spring and fall). We strive to keep the water of good quality during the winter, so we leave less stress on the fish during the colder months. You will see later in this project how we installed a valve at the bottom of the pond to allow easy cleaning, making maintenance easy enough. There are a ton of options for water treatment, filtration and pumping systems that you can buy. You can look at other Koi pond designs to determine what works best for you and decide what is best for you. We started with a very simple shape and added later on whatever we wanted. The pond remains crystal clear with a simple filtration system, which will be explained below. It is important to note that even if your water is clean, this does not mean that the quality of the water is not harmful to the health of your fish. Tests on the 4 main quality indicators of water should be done regularly (especially before releasing the fish into the pond and again a day or two after the fish has settled in the pond) - these are PH, KH, ammonia and nitrites.

Choosing the shape of the slide

You should not get hung up on the slide of the classic form we are accustomed to. You can do it with turns in different directions, like on a bobsleigh track, or with an arch. And you can also try your hand at creating a snow sculpture, and build not just a slide, but a fairy-tale character or a fantastic figure :)

Snow slide sculpture

The angle of inclination is also important: it is optimal at the beginning of the hill - 30-50 °, and then it should be gradually reduced, that is, the descent should be made more gentle. Well, for the smallest, it is better to equip a gentle slope from the very beginning.

How to choose a place for building a pool with your own hands

Find a place for pool on a small plot of land and, moreover, build it yourself - the possibility of implementing such a project is clearly demonstrated in our Photo material. Before the beginning building a swimming pool in the country we have studied this issue in great detail, having studied a lot of special literature and available information on the Internet. After a thorough analysis of all aspects and calculations, we opted for the classic version of the reservoir of geometrically regular shape. The basis for this decision was, in particular, the fact that, as a new landscape design, the artificial pond, due to its rectangular shape, will harmoniously fit into the overall ensemble, forming an architectural unity with the straight lines of the housing of a residential building. This condition was fundamentally important for us.

It was also important for us that the supplier pool offered assistance in the form of technical advice. And for novice builders, not only the timely delivery of materials to the installation site, but also any assistance in the construction of the facility was of great importance.

Playground safety

It's great when a child in the country has a specially equipped place for games and entertainment. We have already talked about how to make it, what can be built on the playground, and I will remind you of the ideas and tips that are published on our website:

  • DIY playground

It's good when a child in the country has an equipped place for games and entertainment.

Now let's remember that it is important to take into account and check once again that the children on the site are safe.

Reliability and strength of structures

  • All structures must be designed for the weight of the child (and better - with a margin) - what is suitable for the games of a three-year-old toddler is not always able to withstand the pressure of a schoolboy tomboy.
  • We deepen the supports for swings, horizontal bars and other structures into the soil and thoroughly fix... Periodically checkwhether the building is loose, whether its elements are damaged.
  • Special attention - connections and joints of parts... These are, perhaps, the most vulnerable points of most structures.

Well processed wood

Splinters are not only painful, but also dangerous: dirt brought into the wound can cause inflammation. Therefore, we process all the wooden elements of the playground as carefully as possible, grind, paint with stable and durable paints.

All structures in the playground must be reliable and durable

Safe materials and toys

At the dacha, improvised objects often become toys for the baby - all kinds of bowls into which it is so interesting to pour water, mother's garden tools with which you can pick sand or build your own beds, and so on. But you and I should understand: no place in the playground glass objects, cans, products made of fragile and brittle plastic (the same bowls and basins sometimes break very easily, leaving sharp fragments in the hands). Even purchased toys, unfortunately, are not always safe and harmless to health.

Sandbox protection from animals

So that the feces of cats and dogs do not end up in the sand, from which the baby sculpts Easter cakes, it is worth considering the possibility close the sandboxwhen there is no one on the site. How it will look is up to you. Of course, the ideal option is a structure where the cover is provided from the very beginning, and it opens and closes easily. But you can also solve the issue with the help of materials at hand - for us, for example, these were two strips of slate left after the roof was repaired. Not the most convenient option, but such a cover coped well with its task, and this is the main thing.

For those who do not have the opportunity to make the "right" sandbox for the baby with their own hands, ready-made solutions can be a good way out.You can choose a design for every taste in our catalog, where the products of large garden online stores are presented. View the selection and choose a sandbox for the playground.

Regular garbage collection and site inspection

Even if guests at your dacha are rare, garbage has a strange habit of appearing as if out of nowhere. Not only does it not decorate our yard, but it can also become a source of all sorts of problems - from possible injuries to infections. So it will not be superfluous to periodically check the territory of the playground and remove the garbage that accidentally fell on it.

The choice of coverage for the site

An important nuance, which should be taken care of immediately, so as not to redo it later. Hard cover traumatic - abrasions and broken knees will not decorate anyone's rest. Sand - already better, but on such a site it will be very dusty, and this is not only an extra wash for the mother, but also possible problems for the baby's health. So let the sand be better in the sandbox. And as a cover for a playground is ideal lawn.

Grass is the perfect cover for a summer cottage

It doesn't matter if it is a sowing lawn, rolled lawn or just grass that you regularly mow. The main thing is that the coating is even, smooth enough, without pits, stones and bumps. For the sowing lawn, choose sport mixtures - they are more resistant to trampling. And don't forget, flowers are great bait for bees. Mow your lawn before they appear - let the flowers show off in the flower beds, and there will be only green grass under your feet.

Good visibility

The place for the playground should be within sight. The best option is when you can go about your business in the garden or in the kitchen, while looking after the playing child (of course, if the age of the baby already allows you to leave him alone). No matter how rationally we organize the children's space in the country, the ingenuity of our children knows no bounds, and they will always find adventure for themselves. Therefore, it is much calmer for parents and safer for children if the playground is clearly visible.

Pond protection measures

One of the most effective pond safety measures is a barrier (fence).

It can be attractive and strong at the same time, but at least 75 cm high:

  • The fence does not have to be permanent. If necessary, it can be inserted into slots dug in the ground.
  • Useful as a fence and plastic spillway pipes about 65 mm in diameter.
  • The fence should be of a comfortable length, approximately 1.2 m, and secured so that it can be easily and quickly disassembled.

Provide debris shields to cover the post slots when not in use. To do this, you can take green branches or blocks of wood with a loop inserted at the top so that they can be easily lifted with a hook. It should also be taken into account that the tree swells when wet, so all pickets and blocks should freely enter the nests. Another option is a metal hoop fence, similar to those commonly used in parks and school playgrounds. If such a fence is painted in olive color, then it will not be noticeable against the background of greenery.

A metal fence is probably more appropriate as a permanent fence around the far end of the pond, while a removable fence can be installed in the front. Such a barrier will also keep dogs out of the pond. Disabled guests using chairs may feel unprotected if no barriers are installed on the paved edges of the pool.

Ideally, the most suitable barrier should be installed during the planting phase and before any stones or paving slabs are laid.

Most barriers are made from square or hollow steel bars. The horizontal plank is installed at a height of about 215 mm above the ground on strong and fairly frequent posts and cannot be dismantled.

Protection of the pond from herons

Some owners of fish ponds are bothered by herons. It is important to have even the slightest idea of the habits of these birds if you want to keep them at bay.

In addition to fish, herons also feed on reptiles, insects, worms and even small birds - those that you can specifically attract by creating shallow areas around the reservoir.

Herons feed mainly at dawn and dusk. Ponds with steep banks and dense thickets of water lily leaves make their life very difficult. These birds prefer shoals and water as they need to see the fish before they can catch it. Herons are especially fond of open areas where the approaching enemy is clearly visible. Therefore, a pond densely overgrown with bushes and tall grass is likely to be less attacked by them. Herons also find it difficult to see fish through rippled surfaces, so even splashes that disturb the water surface can protect the pond.

Also used are mats made of artificial green water lilies, made of non-sinking plastic. They are easy to cut, bend and assemble, and make them a dense “carpet” around the edges of the pond where fish are most at risk.

Live "carpets" of water lilies do not always grow near the shores of the pond and are less noticeable in winter.

You can also stretch the net over the pond, directly above the surface. However, the cells of the network should be no wider than 5 cm from node to node, and the network itself should be sufficiently strong, inflexible and colored green.

The horizontal wire, permanently stretched around the edges of the pond, should rise at least 75 cm above the ground and extend straight to the edges of the pond to prevent herons from entering the pond. It is also desirable that it be green and not very thick. The vertical metal pins should also be sturdy.

Herons will find it difficult to fish in a pond if both sides of the pond are nearly vertical and the water is at least 60 cm below ground level. While this can effectively scare off herons, small animals can still fall into the pond and drown if there is no net over the edges to help them get out of the water. On sale you can find an inflatable plastic scarecrow that rises from the control box every 15 minutes and deflates after 29 seconds. This device runs on a rechargeable battery and is programmed to appear day or night. At night, the scarecrow is illuminated and has a switchable siren. It turns on at random intervals during the night or day. Various models are available with specially selected bird voices, including herons. This device is powered by batteries or an AC adapter. The type of bird voices can be selected by turning on the button.

A heron and cat repeller is also available - a device that, when launched with a taut rope, emits a loud crack from an exploding capsule. The height of the rope can vary, but it must be constantly pulled across all accessible points. This device is somewhat vulnerable to accidental damage, and if it breaks, then the wire is almost impossible to repair and cannot be re-tensioned.

A battery-operated infrared sensor, connected to a garden hose, notifies the arrival of an unwanted guest and deliberately shoots a stream of water.

Similar devices work on the same principles, but emit different high-frequency noises instead of throwing out water. All of these devices are highly effective, but they can catch unsuspecting people by surprise! Resin is commonly used as a simple deterrent to scare away a variety of animals, including cats.

Protecting the pond from waterfowl

Very large ponds usually attract ducks, partridges and coots to spend the night, making them easy prey for foxes. An islet in the center of the pond provides ducks with a somewhat safe refuge and can be used for nesting and overnight stays. It may be very difficult to build a solid island from the bottom of an artificial pond, but a floating platform is just as good if it is securely anchored to the bottom of the pond right in the middle.

How to secure your pond structure

Ponds built on pallets of molded plastic, fiberglass, concrete, and especially those that are raised above the ground, can fail due to frost or thaw. Floating pieces of wood near the edges or installing a pond heater can relieve some of the pressure and prevent structural damage to the structure. It will also improve the living conditions of the fish.

Safe electricity for the pond

The only way to ensure the safe installation of electrical appliances in ornamental ponds is to use a qualified electrician. Even if all electrical appliances are grounded, it is still necessary to have them checked by a specialist before energizing. Energy from the house will be supplied to the pond through an armored cable. It will most certainly be connected to the main power supply by a properly soldered socket and secure plugs.

All weather or watertight nests with all necessary accessories should be installed near the pool. This may include a pump, filter, pool heater, lighting, and more. Any cable leading to the device must be protected by a cable box or conduit.

Improper installation of electrical equipment in combination with water can be fatal.

Protection of the pond from bad weather

Some exotic and whimsical fish suffer from sudden changes in water temperature in winter or early spring. Blankets made of hard or semi-rigid plastic attached to frames can reduce such temperature fluctuations, but it is important to leave small openings for air.

Heavy rainfalls cause flooding and water can spill out of the pool over the edges. If the weir pipe has a diameter of about 25 mm or more, then the fish will be carried out of the pool along with the stream. A filter or safety net will prevent this from happening, so they should not be allowed to get clogged with dirt.
