What's this

Lavender, full botanical name Lavandula officinalis or Lavandula spica, is a small, aromatic evergreen shrub, widespread in the Mediterranean basin and belonging to the Lamiaceae family. Due to its appearance it is very easy to confuse lavender with other aromatic species such as hyssop and rosemary. It grows in arid and stony soils and is very present in regions such as Piedmont and Liguria, up to altitudes of 1800 meters above sea level. It includes several species, including Lavandula stoechas with purple flowers and a very intense perfume that almost stuns; Lavandula latifolia with very large leaves and a less appreciated scent than other species; Lavandula angustifolia with narrower deep green leaves and blue, red or white flowers and Lavandula dentata with serrated leaves. Generally, lavender does not reach one meter in height and the stem is between thirty and sixty centimeters. The leaves are narrow and lanceolate, the flowers blue and the fruit is an achene with a single black seed. Flowering occurs in summer, between July and August. The Italian name "lavender" derives from a Latin term that means "to wash" and this is because in the Middle Ages lavender was used as a cleanser for the body. Today lavender flowers are used in herbal medicine to obtain products with medicinal properties. To use them, the tops of the same must be collected, cleaned and then dried in the shade in a fairly ventilated place.

Property

Lavender is a rustic-looking plant with a strongly aromatic essence. Its scent originates from an essential oil composed of linanol, linaline acetate, camphor, cineole and limonene. Other substances contained in lavender are bitter principles, tannins and flavonoids. The presence of these substances gives lavender extracts aromatizing, carminative, antidispeptic, balsamic and antispasmodic properties. Lavender flowers, associated with other plants, can have choleretic effects, i.e. stimulation of liver and digestive function. The essential oil of lavender officinalis also seems to have antibacterial effects, albeit to a lesser extent than the flowers of other species such as thyme, savory and rosemary. In folk medicine, lavender is also used as a diuretic and spasmolytic. Lavender flowers also appear to have sedative properties that are useful in fighting migraines and headaches. In fact, lavender flower extracts are used to treat neurotonic disorders in adults and children, such as sleep disorders. Although there are no official studies, experimental studies have highlighted the mild antidepressant effects of lavender, but only when combined with antidepressants of traditional medicine. The infusion with dried lavender flowers is also used in the treatment of abdominal pain and bloating. No less important is the external use of the extracts of this plant which prove to be beneficial to cleanse sores and to combat the pain caused by sore throats. Its extracts are also used to prepare mouthwashes useful for mouth hygiene. The essential oil used for the bath would also reduce perineal pains resulting from childbirth. The essential oil also has anti-inflammatory and decongestant effects for skin affections, where it is well tolerated. Finally, the essential oil of Lavendula spica also has mucolytic, decongestant and expectorant properties and is used for aerosol applications.

Uses

We have already mentioned the uses of lavender when talking about the beneficial properties, but the uses of this plant species are truly infinite, also due to the numerous herbal preparations that allow you to obtain various products to be used to treat specific ailments. Folk medicine, as already mentioned, uses lavender infusion not only as a diuretic, but also to combat the lack of appetite, small hepatic insufficiencies and bloating. The infusion is prepared by adding one or two teaspoons of the drug to a cup of boiling water. It is left to rest for about 10 minutes indoors, filtered and then drunk several cups a day. Other herbal preparations are lavender essence in drops, the recommended dose of which is one or four drops a day, to be consumed with a lump of sugar due to the very bitter taste. On the market there are also capsules and tablets that contain lavender powder, the recommended dose is three to six capsules a day. Finally, the mother tincture of lavender in drops provides an ideal dosage of 30 drops during the day and 50 drops in the evening. For external use, lavender extracts can be added to bath water, the recommended dose is 20 to 100 grams of drug per 20 liters of water. Lavender-based products must be stored away from light and humidity. Lavender is rarely used in the kitchen as a flavoring, while in past centuries it was used to perfume the house and disinfect floors. These domestic uses are still practiced today thanks to the household products industry that produces detergents with lavender essences and the cosmetic industry that markets perfumes and body cleansers with the pleasant essence of this plant.

Lavender: Product costs

Lavender essential oil for external use and for aerosol in 12 ml packs costs about ten euros. Before taking the essential oil for internal use, it is advisable to consult a herbalist or phytotherapist because this substance can have a caustic and irritating effect on the mucous membranes.

Lavender: how to grow it in pots or in the garden

Anna Pugliese | 20 July 2020 16 July 2020 | lifeStyle

Lavender is a very fragrant plant with multiple properties. Let's see together how to grow it both at home and in the garden and how to harvest it correctly.

Everyone knows the lavender for its unmistakable scent. It is a good decorative flower and is sometimes also used in the kitchen. This plant is best expressed in the Mediterranean area, in areas where the climate is dry and exposed to the sun. It prefers the heat, but also manages to survive temperature changes.

Can the plant be grown in the vegetable garden or, more simply, in the garden? Sure but, of course, we must remember that it needs at least eight hours of sunshine in one day. Furthermore, lavender is also excellent for keeping mosquitoes away. So let's see how to cultivate it.

Lavender: cultivation

Lavender seeds are very easy to find, in fact, just go to a trusted nursery, or find them from the internet. These, once planted in pots or in the ground, germinate at different times, also taking into account the species. Generally, however, it is possible to see the first results after four weeks.

The vase must be filled with soil and you have to keep it moist at the top. This, therefore, should be placed in a sunny position which can be in the garden, or in front of the window. There sowing lavender takes place between April and June and his flowering runs from June to July.

Lavender: cultivation in the garden

Even if lavender is a very rustic plant it is possible to enrich it with homemade compost. Remember that it is okay to water it regularly, especially if it is very small.

If the plant has become too big to stay inside the house, then, we can transplant it in the garden. By digging a small hole we can insert the lavender inside, then cover it with soil. The soil must not be excessively moist and in contact with other plants. To protect the plant from the winter cold, the surrounding soil can be covered with mulch. Lavender survives well and for many years, close to rocks or walls.

Lavender: how to harvest it

There collection of flowers of lavender coincides with pruning. To do it satisfactorily all you need is scissors, so as not to tear the stems from the ground.

Pruning should be done when they are always seen growing new shoots. We avoid harvesting it during flowering, but always towards the end. Remember that this operation must never be rigorous, otherwise it will be difficult for the lavender to grow back in the future.

Lavender Plant Cultivation and Care: n

There lavender is an easy-to-grow shrub, yes place in a sunny place, with a very well drained soil, even stony can withstand temperatures a few degrees below zero, up to about -12 u00b0C, so in winter you can safely leave it outdoors.
It is an evergreen, the flowering occurs in late spring and in summer it loves sunny and well-ventilated exposures. Some species tolerate intense heat, others fear cold.
It fits all types of soil while preferring calcareous, alkaline and well-drained ones is a plant that should be watered only when the soil is completely dry. liquid fertilizer, specific for green plants, diluted in the irrigation water.

Lavender stoechas: cultivation in pots

It is a perfect plant to embellish the balconies, terrace, patio or courtyard of your home.

It is sufficient to use a nice tall and capacious pot, a good dry soil and a little expanded clay to be placed on the bottom of the pot to facilitate drainage.

The pot should be placed in a sunny and ventilated place and watering should be done when the soil is completely dry, avoiding water stagnation in the saucer.

As Lavender stoechas fears the cold and frosts, as soon as the temperatures begin to decrease, it will be moved to a sheltered but bright environment.

Repotting Lavender

Repotting is done in spring using a container that is taller and wider than the previous one, i.e. of adequate size for the size of the plant. Always acidic soil must be new and fresh. To facilitate the repotting operation and not to traumatize the root, it is advisable to immerse the pot containing the plant in a basin full of water and leave it to soak for at least an hour. The excess water is allowed to drain, the lavender is extracted from the vase and transferred to the new one, filling the gaps with the addition of more soil.

GROWING LAVENDER: LET'S NOT FORGET PRUNING

This small, aromatic, durable and slow-growing shrub resists intense heat, salt and smog and tolerates very low temperatures, down to -15 ° C. Perfect for placing in the garden in flower beds or rocks, it can also be grown in pot, provided it is deep and equipped with a drainage hole. The ideal position is in full sun, where it blooms luxuriantly, but also grows well in bright partial shade.

There Lavender it does not require abundant or frequent irrigation, as it suffers from humidity and water stagnation. In the garden it is sufficient to wet it in spring-summer during drought periods, while the specimens in pots should be irrigated only when the soil is dry.

There Lavender it adapts to all soils, even poor and stony ones, as long as they are well drained. As already mentioned, it is a very rustic plant, so it is not essential, but a contribution of organic fertilizer in pellets or universal slow-release fertilizer is welcome, in autumn and spring.

Pruning, on the other hand, is very important, because if you let the wood of the stem age you will no longer get the flowers. After flowering, the vegetation must be shortened in order to stimulate new shoots that will give flowers the following year.
