Unfortunately, we do not always have the opportunity to pamper ourselves with fresh fruits, vegetables and berries, because in the fall, domestic fruits are replaced by imported ones, stuffed with preservatives. Yes, they look like "fresh from the garden." But needless to say that they are more harmful than useful. Moreover, not everyone has dachas and vegetable gardens. If you want your favorite vegetables, fruits and berries never to be translated in your home, there is an opportunity to equip a miniature vegetable garden on the balcony or windowsill.
Dwarf varieties of avocados are suitable for growing even at home. In order for the plant to bear fruit, it is better to purchase an already germinated seedling. If the seeds are planted, the chances that the plant will bear fruit in the future are minimal. The tree must be transplanted into a large ceramic pot to give the necessary space for the root system. The soil should be loose, a small addition of sand is allowed. You also need to take care of regular watering and drainage.
A deep container is suitable for germinating seeds, because carrots are not a whimsical plant. The soil should be light, even sandy. Seeds must be planted at a distance of about 5 cm from each other. It is important to keep the soil moist during germination. If necessary, you need to remove weak and poorly developed bushes so that they do not take away nutrients from healthy ones. It is recommended to water the carrots with chamomile tea, which will help get rid of fungal diseases.
Beans will grow best on the sunny side. The beans should be planted 3 cm deep and 10 cm apart. It is also necessary to install a grate at the base of the container so that the beans can curl unhindered.
At home, medium-sized varieties such as “Cherry. Plastic bottles without a neck or large boxes are fine for tomatoes. But if space permits, you can make vertical beds. This plant loves sunlight. Therefore, in order for the fruits to ripen well, place the tomatoes on the sunny side of the house. Watering should be regular but moderate. It is worth feeding tomatoes more often. It is recommended to tie up the branches of an already formed plant, as they can break off under the weight of the fruit.
Before planting the bulbs, they must be filled with hot water and left overnight. After that, you need to trim the tops and remove the excess husk. Do not deepen the bulbs into the soil. The distance between them is about five cm. It is recommended that the air temperature does not exceed 20 ° C, otherwise the onion may dry out. As soon as the feathers grow to 25 cm, you can cut them. The most productive varieties are multi-primordial.
The lemon tree will decorate your apartment. Many people start a similar plant just for beauty and aroma. In the first years it grows intensively, reaching a height of about 0.8 - 1.5 m. For the house, this species is quite capricious. But if you properly care for the lemon (water once a week, use potassium fertilizers, regularly provide cool air), then the result will undoubtedly please you.
Fresh pomegranate seeds, which must be taken from a ripe and completely healthy fruit, are quite suitable as seeds. First, the seeds must be completely cleaned of the pulp. When growing pomegranates, you should be patient, because after planting, the plant begins to bloom in 3-4 years. The first years, when the pomegranate is actively growing, it is necessary to frequently and abundantly water it with fresh water. But when the tree begins to bloom, the frequency of watering will have to be reduced. Also, young trees need a regular transplant, which is carried out once a year.
A loggia or a large balcony will be a good help for you to grow blackberries. Saplings grow well in neutral soil. A blackberry bush needs moderate drainage and plenty of sunshine and should be mulched and watered regularly.
Blueberries are not as common in European Russia as blackberries or strawberries. Therefore, the seedlings of this berry are not so easy to get. If you succeeded in this, then it is quite possible to grow blueberries in an apartment. To do this, you need to transplant the plant into acidic soil, provide drainage. To grow blueberry bushes, get a large container (more than 50 cm wide and 60 cm deep). With regular maintenance, the plant will begin to bear its first fruits very soon.
To grow strawberries in an apartment, it is better to use sprouted seedlings, since it is almost impossible to grow strawberries from seeds at home. Strawberries need space, so it is better to plant them in wide and deep containers. The soil should be fertile and light. There are many varieties of strawberries. Care for each of them is individual. But there are general conditions: stable watering of the bushes, moderate amount of sunlight, systematic fertilization of the soil.
For growing the date palm at home, the use of fruit seeds is allowed. But provided that these fruits were not subjected to heat treatment. Like other plants on this list, the date loves light. Therefore, the container with the tree is placed in a bright place. The dates do not need regular watering, but the soil must not be allowed to dry completely, otherwise the tree will dry out and die. The plant needs to be turned from time to time. They do this so that the sun's rays fall on all sides. The date should be watered with soft water without the addition of chlorides. In no case should you "flood" the date palm. More water is added in spring and summer, less in winter. As we found out in this article, you do not have to be a seasoned gardener to grow fruits, vegetables and berries at home. All it takes is regular grooming and patience.

Lemons, tangerines, oranges, grapefruits, sweets and pomelo are the simplest fruits to grow at home from seeds. They are sown in pots 1 cm deep in loose soil. The pots should be kept warm at a temperature of about 25 ° C. It is important to keep the soil moist before germination, so it is better to cover the crops with foil.
Seedlings usually appear in a week. As soon as the sprouts hatch, they must be placed on the lightest window sill or provided with supplementary lighting with a phytolamp.
At home, citruses bear fruit well, but the first fruits of seedlings appear in 10-15 years. But even without them, the tree will delight you: if you form it correctly, it will be fluffy. And what is more pleasant, all citruses purify the air in rooms, because they emit phytoncides.
Tomatoes are not afraid of drafts
Of course, home grown tomatoes will be smaller than greenhouse tomatoes. As a rule, these are varieties of the cherry type. But caring for homemade tomatoes is not much different from those that grow in the country.
Light-loving tomatoes need well-lit windowsills. That is, they require a south, southwest, or west side. If there is not enough light in the apartment, be sure to buy an additional lighting lamp, otherwise the harvest will have to wait for a long time. It is also useful in winter, because indoor tomatoes can bear fruit all year round.
At night they calmly withstand temperatures up to +17, and during the day they require from 22 to 25 degrees Celsius. This temperature is necessary for flowering and the beginning of fruiting. Then it is desirable that the temperature was 3 - 4 degrees higher.
They do not like dampness very much. Like their summer cousins, they do not tolerate stagnant air.
But they are very loyal to drafts. Therefore, they live well on the balcony, where transoms or vents are constantly open. Moreover, when calm reigns, there are problems with pollination: in order for the pollen to hit the pistil, the plants must sway slightly in the wind.
Watering is necessary rare, but abundant.
Like cucumbers, balcony or windowsill tomatoes should ideally be self-pollinating hybrids. It is even better if they are undersized and small-fruited. As a rule, bags of seeds suitable for growing in an apartment are already signed: "Harvest on the windowsill" or "Home garden". Or "Suitable for potting."
Popular varieties: "Balcony miracle", "Room surprise", "Pearl red" (and yellow), "Japanese room", "Bonsai". Dwarf tomatoes: Bonsai micro F1, Cherry Pygmy, Pinocchio, Minibel.
Bell peppers, commonly called Bulgarian peppers, are very useful and unpretentious, both in the garden and on the windowsill. The taste does not differ at all from those that grow in the south. Although it grows for a long time, and you will receive the first fruits only after 5 - 6 months. But the crop can be removed continuously for the next 2 - 3 years. Don't be surprised if the stem turns from grassy to wood during this time. Peppers do not tolerate deepening during transplanting - the pot can grow as it grows, but the earth can only be filled up from the bottom and from the sides.
Like other vegetables, peppers need the lightest windowsill, the sunniest room, where there is the most light. If such a room is not available, phytolamps will come to the rescue.
The optimum temperature for pepper during the day is from +20 to +26 degrees. At night - from +18 to +20.
This sissy is intolerant of drafts, you need to ventilate very carefully.
Watering is necessary infrequently, but be sure to loosen almost every day.
Peppers are very fond of aphids and spider mites - be sure to make sure that they do not start on plants. When the peppers begin to ripen, the plants need to be strengthened so that they do not break under the weight - either tied up or propped up.
If you want to grow bitter pepper as well (it is also unpretentious, and its requirements are about the same as the Bulgarian one), then in no case grow them on the same windowsill as the Bulgarian one. Otherwise, the peppers will be pollinated and everything will become bitter.
For indoor cultivation, early maturing self-pollinating hybrids are needed. Moreover, the varieties are universal - both for open ground and for a window sill.
Popular varieties: indoor, yellow "Patio-Ivo", thick-walled bright red "California Miracle", purple "Ode". The Jupiter F1 hybrid is also growing well. And also mid-early varieties: "Swallow", "Winnie the Pooh", "Gift of Moldova", etc.
And you don't need seeds to grow greens. It is enough to buy a pot in the store.
Estonian startup offers its own automatic mini-farms for growing greenery
Estonian startup Click & Grow is working on a technology to grow greenery right in an urban setting. The refrigerator-sized automatic vertical “smart farm” keeps track of the amount of water, nutrients and lighting that plants need. Minimal maintenance and drastically reduced amount of water required for growth are interesting properties of the farm that can make it popular.
Click & Grow is no stranger to growing plants in cities. They ran a super-successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign a few years ago and are now offering smart pots and smart gardens to everyone. These devices are also designed for growing plants at home. One plant grows in a pot, three in a garden. This is not much, but they also take up space like an ordinary flower pot. But, unlike a pot, everything is done automatically.

Vertical mini farm
The unique Smart Soil technology, in the development of which Russian scientists also took part, makes it possible to use spongy material instead of ordinary earth. It does not thicken over time, nutrients are not washed out of it, and it is highly permeable to oxygen for plant growth. Smart Gardens are equipped with LED lighting, ideal for plant growth, and supply them with the right amount of water, which only needs to be refilled once a month.
Instead of a refrigerator. The joy of being a vegetarian.
So far, vertical farms are not yet available for general sale, but prototypes are already being assembled to order. If it is as simple and economical to operate as previous startup products, then the potential for its use is vast. After all, agriculture is the largest consumer of fresh water, for example, in the United States, farmers use up to 80% of all water consumed by residents. In those places of the planet where there are interruptions in water supply, or in large overcrowded cities, where fresh greens have to be delivered from afar, the idea of saving water, coupled with growing greens “on site”, will surely receive support. Indeed, even if it is useless to drink yoghurts, then no one will argue about the benefits of consuming greens.
Vertical farms in urban environments have been planned for a long time. And they can actually use 70-80% less water than conventional farms. But their cost, due to the high complexity of the hydroponic system, is tens of thousands of dollars. Smart Farm, on the other hand, promises to deliver at a price of only $ 1500. And if not everyone can set up such a farm next to a refrigerator, then large supermarkets will certainly be interested in the opportunity to sell super-fresh greens grown right in the warehouse.
There are two ways to grow an avocado from a seed. In the first case, we remove the shell from the bone, plant it to a depth of 2-3 cm. The second method: leave the shell and at the level of the middle of the bone we drill 3 small holes at an angle of 120 degrees. 3 matches are inserted into them, which will be supports along the edges of a glass of water. The water level must be maintained exactly under the bone. After the roots appear, we transplant it into a pot.
Of course, this is not about vegetative reproduction, because lentils are themselves a seed, which means they are the result of sexual reproduction. However, this is one of those foods in the closet and can be grown again if the whole bag is not used to cook.
Soak the lentils in a glass of water for about 12 hours, then place them on cotton wool or damp gauze in an opaque, closed container that is placed in a dark place during germination. It will take 5 to 6 days.
At this stage, you will need to rinse the grains every day. You can then remove the lid and place the container in the light (not in direct sunlight!) While the young shoots develop. Water it regularly. You can sprinkle green lentil shoots on a ready-made dish or salad.
