Native to the tropics, bright lantana is suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation. It has the shape of a bush, tree or ampelous plant. During the flowering period, lantana changes the color of the flowers.

Description of lantana

Lantana is a perennial plant in the vervain family. Her homeland is South Africa and the tropics of America.

The stem is straight, covered with thorns. The height of a house plant is 30–40 cm, in nature it grows up to 1.5 m. The leaves are located opposite each other, pointed to the edge. The lower part of the leaf is pubescent.

Numerous lantana flowers are collected in ball-shaped inflorescences

There is a feature of the plant - during the flowering period, the flowers change shades. Lantana blooms from May to September. In place of flowers, fruits are formed - fleshy berries with 2 seeds.Numerous small tubular flowers are collected in spherical inflorescences with a diameter of about 5 cm.Shades of lantana flowers are amazing with their palette of colors - orange, yellow, pink, red, purple.

The plant is unpretentious in care, but it should be remembered that lantana is poisonous.

Lantana species

The Lantana genus includes 150 plant species, but only 2 of them are grown for decorative purposes.

  1. Montevideo (selloviana). Thanks to the creeping stems, this species can be grown in hanging pots. Flowers, in comparison with lantana prickly, are smaller, purple and pink-lilac flowers. Flowering continues until November.
  2. Lantana camara (or prickly). Flowers change: yellow and pink turn to red or orange. Blooms until August. The stem is prickly, the leaves are oval, dark green.
  3. Lantana camara hybrids:
    • Bandana Pink. The highest among the varieties.
    • Calippo Gold. A fluffy bush with bright yellow flowers.
    • Hybrid. Quite a tall bush (up to 80 cm), shriveled leaves, tetrahedral stems. Flowers are yellow, red-orange by the end of flowering.
    • Tropic Lantanas Tukan. It blooms with yellow-white flowers.
    • White Dwarf. The flowers remain white throughout the flowering period.
    • Calippo Tutti Frutti. Flowers change color from yellow-orange to pink-purple.
    • Flamingo. A compact plant with pink and white flowers.
    • Orange. As the name suggests, it blooms with orange flowers.

Table: living conditions for different seasons

Spring Summer18–22aboutFROMIt tolerates dry air well. In the warm season, it is recommended to take the plant out into fresh air, if this is not possible, regularly ventilate the room. It is necessary to spray periodically. At least 3-5 hours of direct sunlight per day (not midday). Lantana is suitable for the southern, southeastern and southwestern sides.
Autumn winter5–8aboutFROMSpraying is required.

Lantana requires loose soil with good air and water permeability. For self-preparation of the mixture, you will need to use garden and leaf soil, coarse sand or perlite (all in equal shares). And also you need to add peat (30% of the total mass), which will retain water.

A pot that is too spacious is not required, as a small space for the root system stimulates the plant to bloom. It is best to take a light-colored ceramic pot 1–3 cm larger than the previous one. Lantana spends some time in the sun, so it is important that the pot does not overheat. Drainage is required at the bottom of the tank. It is recommended to replant lantana every year in April.

Lantana does not need a pot that is too spacious

Transplant process

  1. Fill a new pot with 3-4 cm drainage.
  2. Take out the plant along with the earthy clod. Shake off lightly.
  3. Place lantana in a new container, sprinkle with soil. When planting, the plant must be placed in a pot so that the top of the ground is flush with the root collar.
  4. The soil around the roots must be compacted.

Caring for lantana, as for all indoor plants, consists in proper watering, timely feeding, pruning.

Watering and feeding

In watering, it is important to observe the measure - both waterlogging and drying out are harmful. In summer, lantana should be watered every 3-5 days. The soil in the pot should be moist at all times.

In winter, watering is reduced to 1 time in 1.5–2 weeks. The top layer of the earth should dry out a little between waterings.

Lantana is fed with a special fertilizer for flowering indoor plants

During growth and flowering (spring - summer), lantana is fed once every 2 weeks with a special fertilizer for flowering plants. The soil should be well moistened during feeding. You can also use organic matter (alternating with mineral compositions) - for example, mullein infusion (1:10). When buds appear, 30 g of superphosphate (previously dissolved in hot water) is added to the fertilizer per 10 liters of water.

Fertilizing with a high nitrogen content will cause the plant to thrive without blooming.

Flowering period

Lantana bloom begins in May and lasts for several months. Beautiful globular inflorescences attract attention. Flowers of one inflorescence can be colored in different shades.

Lantana bloom begins in May, lasts all summer

Faded flowers are pruned, preventing the formation of fruits, which weaken flowering.

Dormant period

Providing a dormant period for lanthanum is the key to good flowering in the next season. The temperature of the room where lantana winters should be within 8-10aboutC. Watering is reduced, feeding is stopped. If the lanthanum sheds some of the foliage at the same time, do not worry. The dormant period lasts from November to February.

To form a beautiful neat crown, the plant is pruned in the spring, after the end of the dormant period. Pruning also stimulates flowering.

Shoots are cut by about a third with sharp disinfected scissors. After that, new branches begin to actively form.

Depending on the wishes of the owner, lantana can become a bush, a standard tree or an ampelous plant.

Formation of lantana on the trunk

  1. Choose an upright young lantana with a strong stem.
  2. Remove all side shoots, leaving only the top.
  3. Set up a support (such as a bamboo or wooden peg) and tie the plant to it. This is to keep the trunk straight.
  4. When the lantana grows to the correct height, the top of the stem should be cut off. The support can be changed to an even higher one.

As a result of pruning from lantana, you can get a standard tree

Diseases and pests of lantana

Lantana is practically not susceptible to diseases, but it can sometimes be attacked by insect pests.

Table: pests of lantana and methods of dealing with them

PestsSymptomsProphylaxisControl measures
Spider miteSmall red insect that forms cobwebs on plant parts. The plant dries up.
  1. Maintain the required air humidity.
  2. Provide timely watering.
  3. Choose the right substrate for the plant.
  1. Add 30 g of chopped dandelion roots to the medicinal tincture of dandelion, pour 1 liter of hot water. Insist 2 hours, spray the plant for 3-5 days.
  2. Treatment of the plant with Aktara (according to the instructions).
WhiteflySmall butterflies that leave a sticky coating on the leaves. It becomes a habitat for the sooty fungus.
  1. Collect butterflies by hand.
  2. Spray with onion solution (pour 20 g of husk into 1 liter of water, leave for 5 days, strain).
  3. Treat with Aktara, Mospilan, Tanrek (according to the instructions).
ShieldSmall brown plaques on the leaves.
  1. Collect pests by hand. They are difficult to separate from the plant, so you can grease the shells with kerosene or vinegar and wait 2-3 hours.
  2. Treat with Fitoverm, Fosbecid, Metaphos (according to the instructions).

Reproduction of lantana

A new lantana plant can be obtained from seed or cuttings.

  1. Cut off cuttings (8–10 cm) from an adult plant. As a rule, twigs obtained as a result of pruning at the end of February are used for propagation.

  2. Treat the stalk with Heteroauxin.
  3. Plant the cuttings at an angle in a moist mixture of peat and perlite.
  4. Cover the container with cuttings with foil (required temperature - 24 ° C).
  5. When new axillary leaves appear, you can gradually begin to harden and air the seedlings. It is necessary to open the film for a short time every day, remembering to wipe it dry.
  6. A month after hardening, plant the cuttings in separate pots with the usual soil for lanthanum.

  5. Reduce room temperature gradually to 14aboutC (if this is not done, the seedlings will stretch out).

Reviews about the cultivation of lantana

I brought my lantana from Turkey, where they grow on the streets in large bushes. For rooting, I cut off semi-lignified branches of 15 cm, i.e. "Tops". They feel like herbaceous plants, like wormwood. I took it home in a damp napkin, dipped it in a stimulant (Kornevin), stuck it in the ground and under the bag. In the same way, I renew the plant once a year or two, they always take root without problems. In the summer, I plant lantana outdoors. Last year, after frosts in June, it froze over slightly, and then grew back from the trunk. She almost did not have time to bloom, by the fall she had just picked up buds. And before that, in previous years, it grew into a lush bush, up to a meter in height, with abundant flowering. This is a southern plant that loves the sun very much. With a weak sun, it also blooms, only stretches the branches and does not bush too much. Another nice thing about growing lantana is its drought tolerance. She drinks a lot, after watering the earth dries up instantly and so it stands as a dry lump, this does not affect flowering and leaves. In general, it is better to dry than to pour. And a couple of unpleasant moments. The main reason why I plant lantana in the garden in the summer is its garbage. Small flowers crumble after flowering, it is impossible to collect them manually, only a vacuum cleaner helps. Second, the plant sap and berries are poisonous. Just take this into account, wash your hands and tool after trimming.

It has been growing for me for several years. Moreover, I planted several cuttings of two varieties in one pot. This gives even more originality to my flower. The plant is completely unpretentious to the soil; I add a little sand to the universal soil. Lantana perfectly tolerates dry air, and a few hours of direct sun is simply shown to her. I have it on the west side of the balcony. I'm sure the southern lantana would bloom even better! The more light, the more abundant the flowering! It is necessary to water abundantly as the soil dries up, avoiding overdrying. With prolonged drought, it may die. I feed it with the beginning of flowering 2 times a month with the fertilizer "Kemira Lux". In winter, lantana, of course, is best kept in a cool room with a temperature of 8-10 degrees. But I don't have such conditions, she hibernates in an apartment, and she stands near the window, and not on the windowsill. I cut off the extended branches in the spring. Pruning is one of the main conditions for a compact flower shape and good flowering.

Until recently, I would never have classified this plant as exotic ... Well, it blooms with yellow-orange flowers, grows quickly, just in care ... Grandmothers love to grow it and the whitefly loves to eat it ... In short, lantana and lantana. BUT: progress in breeding has involved in breeding not only the vaulted lantana (Lantana camara), which is familiar to us, but also its hybrids with other American species. More and more new varieties and colors are being created ... Breeders have already played enough with multicolored inflorescences, now they have bred pure white and pure yellow varieties ... In addition, other types of lantana have been introduced into the culture. So, Montevideo lantana is very good for ampel cultivation.

Caring for this flower is not difficult, in winter I simply reduced watering for him. In the spring, she cut off the shoots and began to feed. I do top dressing every watering, but I reduce the dose in half, which is indicated on the top dressing package. If you don't touch the flower, then you don't notice the aroma, but if you touch the foliage, it smells like lemon balm or orange, it's very nice. At the beginning of flowering, the flowers are delicate lemon, then they turn bright orange. By planting such a flower, you will have an extra sun.

I just adore lantana, I have had it for several years, I periodically update it. All these years it was only yellow-orange, and this year I also bought a white-lilac one. I planted everything in one pot, beauty !!! It hibernates on the loggia, the loggia is not heated, but glazed and insulated. If they promise severe frosts, I take it to the room, somewhere up to three degrees I feel fine. But I cut it to the cold.
