A sugar snap pea is a true delight to pick right out of the garden and eat fresh. If you just can’t get enough, try adding some Super Snappy pea plants to your fall garden, which produce the largest of all sugar snap pea pods.

Sugar Snappy Pea Info

Burpee Super Snappy peas are the biggest of the sugar snap peas. The pods contain between eight and ten peas. You can let the pods dry and remove just the peas to use, but like other sugar snap pea varieties, the pod is just as delicious. Enjoy the entire pod with peas fresh, in savory dishes like stir fries, or preserve them by freezing.

For a pea, Super Snappy is unique among varieties in that it does not need a support on which to grow. The plant will only grow to about 2 feet tall (.6 m.), or a little taller, and is sturdy enough to stand on its own.

How to Grow Super Snappy Garden Peas

These peas take 65 days to go from seeds to maturity, so if you live in zones 8 through 10, you can directly sow them in spring or fall and get a double harvest. In colder climates, you may need to start indoors in the spring and direct sow mid- to late-summer for a fall harvest.

You may want to use an inoculate on the seeds before planting if you have not bought a product that is already inoculated. This process allows the legumes to fix nitrogen from the air, which leads to better growth. This isn’t a necessary step, especially if you have successfully grown peas in the past without inoculate.

Directly sow or start seeds in cultivated soil with compost. Space the seeds about 2 inches (5 cm.) apart and to a depth of about one inch (2.5 cm.). Once you have seedlings, thin them until they stand just about 10 inches (25 cm.) apart. Keep your pea plant well watered but not soggy.

Harvest your Super Snappy peas when the pods are fat, bright green, and crisp but before the peas inside are fully developed. If you want to use the peas only, leave them on the plant longer. They should be easy to pick off the plant by hand.

3 Types of Peas for Your Garden

Peas are such a rewarding vegetable to grow. They are one of the earliest crops to mature in the spring and you can use them in all kinds of dishes. In fact, you can eat them right off the vine as a snack in the garden. And since they are legumes, they are as good for the soil as they are for people.

Peas are easy enough to grow. The most difficult part of growing peas is choosing what kind you want to grow. There are basically three types of peas: English peas, snow peas, and sugar snap peas. Each goes by multiple names, making the choice all the more confusing. But once you get the differences clear, you will probably want to grow some of each.

Here's everything you need to know below about growing each type of pea.

How to Grow Burpeeana Early Seeds

Bred by seed giant Burpee, the “Burpeeana Early” pea (Pisum sativum var. sativum) offers 3-inch pods, each with eight to 10 peas. Burpeeana is a bush pea that grows to 24 inches in height with an 8-inch spread. Plant the pea seeds in coastal gardens in November. Inland gardeners can plant as early as September. Harvest the Burpeeana peas 63 days after planting.

Choose a sunny spot to grow Burpeeana peas. They require six to eight hours of sun each day. The ideal spot is one in which you’ve grown legumes in the past. If this is the first legume crop planted in the area you’ll need to inoculate the Burpeeana seeds.

Loosen the soil in the planting bed, to a depth of 6 inches. Add a 3-inch layer of compost to the soil and use a pitchfork or gardening fork to blend it well. Rake the bed until it’s smooth.

Water the planting bed until it is saturated to a depth of 6 inches. Wait two to three days to plant.

Soak the Burpeaana pea seeds in a bowl of tap water overnight. Just before planting, sprinkle garden inoculant over them. The inoculant contains Rhizobium bacteria (Rhizobium leguminosarum), which attach themselves to the pea’s roots and convert the nitrogen in the air to a form that the pea can use.

Install the stakes, trellis or other support structure. Even though Burpeeana is a bush pea, it will require some support.

Place the Burpeeana seeds on the soil, 2 inches apart and cover them with 2 inches of soil. If you are planting more than one row of peas, use double rows with 6 inches between them and 24 inches between each double set of rows.

Avoid watering the Burpeeana seeds until after they sprout. Seeds planted in cold moist soil are susceptible to rot. The seeds should sprout within one to two weeks.

Thin the seedlings when they reach 1 to 2 inches in height. Choose the strongest one and remove the others until the seedlings are 4 to 6 inches apart.

Sprinkle a layer of mulch on the soil around the Burpeeana pea plants when they reach 2 inches in height. Add more as the plants grow.

Water the seedlings only if the soil is dry to the depth they were planted. If it doesn’t rain, water once a week, to a depth of 6 inches, when the plant flowers and begins producing pods.

Inspect the Burpeeana pea plants for signs of aphids (Aphis spp.), small green or white bugs that cluster together, typically on the undersides of foliage. Use a blast of water from the hose to knock them off.

If any of these factors are not right, it may cause the seed to not perform and because most, if not all, of these factors are out of our control, most of the success of these seeds is in the hands of the grower. If they have been cared for properly and still fail to grow, we will replace the seed or issue a credit voucher, one time.
