Bottlenose dolphin, scientific name Tursiops truncatus of the family Delphinidae, is the best known dolphin, studied and present in captivity in aquariums and water parks all over the world, thanks to its great intelligence and tamability.

It is a mammal that is found in all temperate and tropical waters of the world, especially along the coasts, but it can also be found in pelagic waters (those that extend beyond the edge of the continental shelf).

The bottlenose dolphin has a tapered and robust body that ends on one side with a characteristic snout and on the other with a horizontally arranged caudal fin (as in the whale and orca, unlike most fish), not particularly large (about 60 cm wide ) but with good musculature that allows it to reach speeds of 30 km / h thanks to the particularly hydrodynamic shape of the body (the average is 3-6 km / h).

Bottlenose dolphins are endothermic homeothermic cetaceans (which keep their body temperature constant thanks to internal regulation processes): if the external temperature undergoes variations over 28 ° C and below 13 ° C, their metabolism can consequently vary. .

They exhibit sexual dimorphism as males are larger than females and this is thought to be determined by females first reaching sexual maturity and then stopping growing (and thus focus their energies and resources on procreation) while males continue to grow for a long time.

Usually the body is gray-blue in color which tends to be lighter in the ventral part (although it has been observed that depending on the geographical area the color changes), without hair and external ears.

They are equipped with two pectoral fins (about 30-50 cm long) characterized by a skeleton very similar to that of the hands of terrestrial mammals and a dorsal fin about 20 cm high, curved, sickle-shaped that generally with age it undergoes various abrasions which are used by researchers to recognize single individuals.

The snout is provided with an elongated rostrum (about 8 cm long) and tapered with the nostrils moved towards the back. Each jaw has 18-26 pairs of conical teeth, often gray in color, 5-10 cm in diameter. On the upper part of the head there is a blowhole, through which the dolphin exhales the breathed air. This breather can be closed thanks to voluntary muscles. They have very short breathing shifts, having to rise to the surface every few minutes to breathe.

In the lower part of the body of the bottlenose dolphin there are several openings: in the female bottlenose dolphin there are three, one that accommodates both the vagina and the anus and two for the mammary glands located at the side of the genital fissure; in the male there are two openings, one for the penis and the other for the anus.

The eyes are located on the sides of the head and are structured in such a way as to allow the bottlenose dolphin to see even in low light; moreover, the retina is equipped with both cones and rods as in the human eye, which are thought to allow the dolphin to also see colors. They produce a secretion similar to human tears with a disinfectant function.

The bottlenose dolphin is a social animal that lives in flocks formed by a few up to twenty individuals although it has been observed that there are some pelagic specimens that form very numerous flocks with hundreds of specimens.

They can form different types of groups: mothers and children; young dolphins both male and female still adolescents; adult males.

In captivity it has been observed that a dominance is established within the group on the basis of age and size: the largest adult male is generally the dominant male. If the male is not present then it is the larger female who assumes the dominant position.

It is normal for females with their young to join other females with their young to help each other in the care and protection of their children.

The bottlenose dolphin mainly uses sound to communicate with its fellows, hearing being the most developed sense. Each dolphin is thought to have its own unique "vocal imprint" which remains throughout its life and is recognized by other dolphins.

It has a rich repertoire of sounds, whistles and screeches that seem to also serve to indicate the position and emotional state of a dolphin.

The bottlenose dolphin uses echolocation (the same sonar mechanism that uses the reflection of sound waves) both to navigate and to identify the topography of a seabed and to highlight the presence of any predators and it seems that it also serves to stun a prey.

It produces tick-like sounds that I direct using the fat tissues in the forehead which, depending on how they come back, the dolphin is able to recognize what is in front of it.

The diet of the bottlenose dolphin is very varied and is made up of fish and invertebrates when they navigate in shallow water while in deeper waters it feeds on pelagic fish and squid.

Typically its prey is between 5 and 30 cm in length and eats 4.5 to 15 kg of fish per day, depending on the size of the individual or if it is a lactating female.

The bottlenose dolphin uses its intelligence by adapting its hunting techniques according to the circumstances in which it finds itself. It typically feeds in deep water using echolocation to locate prey.

Generally they hunt individually but can also do so in groups and in this case they adopt real hunting strategies: for example, they push the fish making noise towards the shallows or to the shore to make them run aground (see video on the side).

Their sharp teeth allow them to confidently grab prey and then push it down the throat with their tongue. It is not uncommon to see dolphins following fishing boats to retrieve fish escaped from nets or thrown by fishermen.

The bottlenose dolphin is a polygamous animal and can also resort to alliances with other males to mate with a female. When the males find a female in heat they separate from their group and begin to follow her, practically staying close to her, to prevent other males from approaching her; this can last a few weeks, until the female is receptive to mating. Some males instead remain in their group and wait for the females in the group to come into heat and do everything to get the female's attention. No aggressive behaviors were observed in males for possessing a female.

The reproductive period varies from region to region and occurs once a year in the female while the males can mate at any time. Mating between bottlenose dolphins occurs belly to belly and in the same direction.

The gestation lasts about a year at the end of which a puppy 80-150 cm long and weighing 14-20 kg will be born. The baby is suckled by the mother until the age of 18-20 months and the whole group of females in which the mother is found helps in its breeding and education.

Bottlenose dolphins breed every 3-6 years.

The most common predator of the bottlenose dolphin is the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas), the great tiger shark (Galeocerdo Cuvier) and the dark shark (Carcharhinus obscurus). Generally, however, the young and the females are preyed upon, less frequently the adult males.

The bottlenose dolphin is classified on the IUNC Red list among animals at low risk of extinction LEAST CONCERN (LC): it is considered a widespread and abundant animal and its population has been estimated at 600,000 specimens.

Obviously the above data refers to the global number of specimens but there are several areas in the world where the population is rapidly decreasing such as in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea and in particular in the Adriatic where a reduction of 50% has been estimated. of the population in the last 50 years due to human killings to reduce "competition" (dolphins eat too much fish) and environmental degradation.

Regarding the decline in the population of bottlenose dolphins in different parts of the world, it must be taken into account that many dolphins are taken from the open sea every year to be destined for water parks or dolphinaria, for research or for military applications. In addition, every year Japan near Taijij slaughters hundreds of dolphins (as well as porpoises and small whales); or in Peru they are killed for human consumption, to obtain bait or even in this case to eliminate dangerous competitors.

Other causes of unnatural death of the bottlenose dolphin are: getting entangled in fishing nets or swallowing hooks; environmental pollution caused by the urbanization of coastal areas which involves the dumping of agricultural, industrial and human waste into the sea; the impoverishment of the seas which causes the scarcity of food.

The species is listed in Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora, known simply as Washington Convention) which includes species not necessarily threatened with extinction, but whose trade must be controlled in order to avoid exploitation incompatible with their survival.

The bottlenose dolphin is listed in Annex II of the Habitats Directive of the European Union which prohibits its commercial hunting.

Several scholars state that the healthier a bottlenose dolphin is, the healthier a marine ecosystem is, therefore these dolphins can be considered excellent torsasole maps of the health of our coasts and seas.

The bottlenose dolphin brings great financial activity to man: in water parks they are the main attraction. They are also used for scientific purposes for studies on echolocations and thermoregulations. Thanks to their intelligence they are trained to search for objects on the seabed.

The name of the species troncatus it derives from the fact that the snout seems almost truncated in half.

The English term for the bottlenose dolphin is bottlenose dolphin which means "bottle-nosed dolphin".

The dolphin in a trance

Francesco Tomasinelli 23 May 2020

Resorting to the use of drugs is not an exclusive prerogative of men. Some animals do, too, and the consequences are very different from those observed in our species. Drugs are often taken through plants: seeds, flower nectar, roots, fermented fruits, but also lichens and fungi and, from the observations made so far, it is quite certain that they produce effects such as euphoria, hyperactivity, confusion, relaxation, depending on the substances and quantities ingested.

"Fungie, the dolphin who lives (always) among us"

The hot days of summer are long gone. While the autumn rains and the wind have reclaimed the golden sand beaches, mountains and jagged islands of the many tourists. County Kerry, a remote and beautiful region in the southwest of Ireland, is once again populated only by its quiet inhabitants. However, they are very worried. In Dingle, a surfer's paradise, the concern has a name: Fungie, a male bottlenose dolphin who has disappeared 37 years after its first appearance. His presence had helped transform a small fishing and farming community into a thriving tourist destination.

The last sighting

For two weeks, since the last sighting, the local boats have been going out every day in search of its "traces". Many inhabitants stay at the mouth of the port. They scrutinize with binoculars in hand. It was there that Fungie spent most of his time, revealing his dorsal fin. The hope of seeing him again diminishes day by day. Kevin Flannery, a marine biologist who built an aquarium in the wake of the Fungie phenomenon, recalls that the dolphin "had already disappeared before but never more than a day or two. He was very reliable. This is why I am not optimistic ».

For Dingle, Fungie isn't just a dolphin. It was habit, presence, ritual and source of income. This is why the feeling that winds is similar to mourning. Caroline Boland, spokesperson for the Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance interprets the mood: “People are devastated at the thought that he may be gone. It is like a family member who dies. He brought the magic and inspired us, a beautiful wild creature who lived at the mouth of the harbor. " Fungie could be over 40 years old (it is believed that the average age of a dolphin is between eight and 17 years). It was first noticed in the port of Dingle in 1983. "When it appeared 37 years ago, there was nothing here but fishing and agriculture," said Ms. Boland of the tourism alliance. Two sectors in decline today ». Since then, the first to arrive have been artists and creatives. Then the chefs who have opened restaurants. While newspapers and magazines, such as National Geographic, began to tell the "character" Fungie.

In addition to trade, the dolphin has also spawned legends. A Dublin newspaper reported rumors that a rival village of Kerry was trying to bribe him with mackerel to lure him. Another popular myth tried to explain Fungie's longevity with the existence of three different dolphins: local companies would conspire to keep the brand. The fact is that every tourist who came to Dingle to spot the dolphin fueled the burgeoning whale watching industry. An hour by boat to admire Fungie playing in the sea cost around 16 euros per adult and 8 per child. It has now disappeared. "This is life," commented a tour operator. Who adds: "Perhaps the mystery of his disappearance could come in handy." Perhaps, more simply, there is no mystery: only a dolphin's return to a wilder state.

The Bottlenose Dolphin, the coastal dolphin

Who is the bottlenose dolphin and where does it live? What are the dangers of the busy Ligurian Sea?

Bottlenose dolphins of Western Liguria: in recent years there has been an increase in the number of sightings of the species in this area, once considered very rare to encounter. In fact, these cetaceans prefer shallow and sandy bottoms and our range has historically been considered unsuitable for their stay. Despite this knowledge on the ecology and distribution of this species, something has undoubtedly changed and after almost three years of study we begin to have the first important results.

Davide Ascheri and Elena Fontanesi

Davide Ascheri (President): graduated in Marine Biology and Ecology from the University of Genoa. Son of a captain, sailing instructor, diver and also ski instructor, he has a passion for the sea and all its inhabitants since he was a child. His great interest in cetaceans led him to participate in some research projects in Italy, Alaska and Spain. Since 2018 he has been responsible for the Delfini del Ponente research project, mainly dealing with photo-identification and social structure of the community of these dolphins.

Elena Fontanesi (Vice President): despite coming from the Po Valley, she has been passionate about the sea and all its creatures since she was very young. Diving instructor since 2013, she graduated in Marine Biology at the University of Bologna after spending a year of studies in Tasmania studying 'dwarf' minke whales. He has collaborated with research groups on cetaceans in northern Sardinia, Ischia and Queensland. In 2017 he arrives in Imperia to work in environmental dissemination and education with Costa Balenae and in the meantime the scientific collaboration with SEAME Sardinia continues. Since 2018 she has been the scientific coordinator of the Delfini del Ponente research project.

Dolphins of Ponente APS

Delfini del Ponente APS was created with the aim of deepening the knowledge of the marine environment, in order to protect biodiversity and promote better coexistence between human activities and safeguarding the natural heritage. Through scientific research it aims to identify areas of naturalistic importance, in particular in the marine but also terrestrial environment and promote their protection. At the same time it aims to raise awareness among the population about these issues, through activities aimed at protecting the natural heritage also through the actions of the individual citizen. 'The main activity carried out by the association is the research project' Delfini del Ponente ' , already underway for several years, as it started in 2018 within the Costa Balenae cooperative of Imperia. This project aims to monitor the presence of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and other marine fauna in the waters between Capo Noli and the state border not far from the coast, given the coastal habits of this marine mammal, at a depth of no more than 500 meters.
