People interested in sustainable living often opt for underground gardens, which when properly built and maintained, can provide vegetables at least three seasons out of the year. You may be able to grow some veggies year round, especially cool weather vegetables like kale, lettuce, broccoli, spinach, radishes or carrots.

What are Pit Greenhouses?

What are pit greenhouses, also known as underground gardens or underground greenhouses? In simple terms, pit greenhouses are structures that cold climate gardeners use to extend the growing season, as underground greenhouses are much warmer in winter and the surrounding soil keeps the structure comfortable for plants (and people) during summer heat.

Pit greenhouses have been constructed in the mountains of South America for at least a couple of decades with tremendous success. The structures, also known as walipini, take advantage of solar radiation and the thermal mass of the surrounding earth. They are also widely used in Tibet, Japan, Mongolia, and various regions across the United States.

Although they sound complex, the structures, which are often built using repurposed material and volunteer labor, are simple, inexpensive and effective. Because they are built into a natural slope, they have very little exposed area. The structures are usually lined with brick, clay, local stone, or any material dense enough to store heat effectively.

Underground Greenhouse Ideas

Building an underground pit greenhouse can be accomplished in various ways, but most pit greenhouses are usually basic, functional structures without a lot of bells and whistles. Most are 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 m.) deep, which allows the greenhouse to take advantage of the earth’s warmth.

It’s possible to incorporate a walkway so the greenhouse can also be used as a root cellar. The roof is angled to provide the most warmth and light from available wintertime sun, which keeps the greenhouse cooler during the summer. Ventilation keeps the plants cool when summer temperatures are high.

Other ways to optimize heat during the winter months are to supplement light and heat with grow lights, to fill black barrels with water to store heat (and to irrigate plants), or to cover the greenhouse roof with an insulating blanket during the coldest nights.

Note: There’s one important factor to keep in mind when building an underground pit greenhouse: Be sure to keep the greenhouse at least 5 feet (1.5 m.) above the water table; otherwise, your underground gardens may be a flooded mess.

Build a $300 Underground Greenhouse for Year-round Fresh Food

Gardening and people who love to put their hands into soil and tend to growing plants know no boundaries — certainly there’s no less of them in the cold climates — but you can’t just go outside and garden all year round once you get away from the hot equator.

One thing some people do, though, is extend their growing seasons with greenhouses, indoor and outdoor. And another way to do it is to build an underground pit greenhouse, which is better in the way that it costs less to heat than a standing greenhouse. These originated in South America about 20 years ago.

How does year-round gardening at a price of a few hundred dollars sound to you? So that you can just go out and get some lettuce, tomatoes, or any other produce at any time – no trip to the grocery store, and you know your food is fresh. People are doing this in these underground gardens. How are they set up?

It’s basically a pit dug in the dirt near your house. The best style is probably the room-shaped rectangle pit. It’s easier to put a roof on. They dig a few feed down , then lay out their garden paths and the areas of soil for their crops.

Some people also put in a fireplace. This has two functions. One is that if they ever need to heat up their greenhouse, they can burn wood in it. But another use is in the summer when it gets really hot – over 100 degrees, the fireplace acts as a vent, letting the hot air out through the chimney.

On top of the recessed room, people dig a small staircase and door for entry (or more than one door, which also can allow air flow). Then they set up a simple a-frame roof frame and staple clear poly sheets on it to let light in and keep heat in. They set up a plastic (or other) barrel as a water reservoir. A hose comes through the wall to fill it. Another hose comes out and waters the greenhouse beds.

The total cost of this, depending on what you already have around and what you can get a deal on, is estimated to be between $100 and $300.

Now, a lot of you already are thinking, probably, about the vegetables and fruits you can grow in here, whether for yourself or to sell at a local produce market, but you can also grow flowers in a greenhouse – and if you have a big greenhouse, why not? Here’s a list of plants that can be grown in greenhouses:

Achimenes ,Agapanthus, Ageratum, Alonsoa (Mask Flower), Anthericum (St Bernard Lily), Antirrhinum (Snapdragon), Aristolochia (Dutchman’s Pipe), Arum Lily, Azalea ,Babiana ,Begonia, Beloperone (The Shrimp Plant), Bougainviilea, Browallia, Brunfelsia, Calceolaria (Slipper Flower), Calendula (Pot Marigold), Camellia, Campanula (Bell-flower), Canna (Indian Shot), Carnations, Celosia, Celsia, Chorizema, Chrysanthemum, Cineraria, Clarkia, Ciivia, Cobaea (Cups and Saucers), Coleus, Columnea, Cornflower, Crocus, Cyclamen, Cytisus, Daphne, Deutzia, Dicentra (Bleeding Heart), Echium, Erica (Heath), Erythrina, Eucomis (Pineapple Flower), Exacum, Forsythia, Francoa (Bridal Wreath), Freesia, Fremontia, Fuchsia, Gerbera (Barberton Daisy), Gloriosa, Gloxinia, Godetia, Heliotrope (Cherry Pie), Hippeastrum, Hoya, Hyacinth, Hydrangea, Impatiens (Balsam), Ipomoea, Iris, Kalanchoe, Laburnum, Lachenalia, Lantana, Lapageria, Lilium, Mignonette, Narcissus, Naegelia, Nemesia, Nerine, Nerium (Oleander), Pelargonium, Petunia, Phlox, Plumbago, Primula, Rehmannia, Rhododendron, Saintpaulia (The African Violet), Salpiglossis, Salvia, Schizanthus (The Butterfly Flower), Scilla, Solanum (Winter Cherry), Sparmannia, Statice, Stephanotis, Streptocarpus, Streptosolen, Thunbergia, Torenia, Trachelium, Trachymene, Tritonia, Tuberose, Tulip, Vallota, Verbena, Viscaria, Zinnia

Some people also keep animals in the greenhouse! Chickens and even herds like goats (during the coldest times of year mostly). These are cheap livestock because chickens can live freely and just come in to the greenhouse to lay eggs and get warm, while they can just find their own food outside. So they cost nothing or close to it.

Year Round Growing in Underground Greenhouses

There is a growing need for safe, healthy, and natural food items, and what seems like a decreasing amount of space to grow healthy organic food in nutrient-rich soil. Growers are always looking for methods which will save energy, reduce pollution, grow more and higher quality crops, and they want something that is affordable. Underground greenhouses are a preferred method for the environmentally conscious grower.

Underground greenhouses can be constructed within a wide variety of geographic and climatic conditions, and because the ground is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, you are creating a far more stable micro-climate than growing outside. Typically, the design is built three to five feet underground, and the setup allows for the collection and storage of daytime solar radiation. Growing can be done all year long regardless of the weather conditions, which is why the underground greenhouses are referred to as the Walipini, meaning the “place of warmth”.

The greenhouse is covered with plastic sheeting, and the longest area of the rectangle of the design faces the winter sun. For the Southern Hemisphere it would face to the north, and vice versa for those in the Northern Hemisphere. The depth of the project allows the farmer to utilise thermal constant temperatures, enabling food to grow in colder weather conditions. The underground, nature-friendly method has been around for decades, and proven to be an efficient design which utilizes nature’s resources in order to provide a stable and warm environment for year-long growing.

Angle of the Roof to the Sun

The angle of the roof makes a difference on the sun’s ability to heat your greenhouse. The roof should be facing directly on 21/21December at a 90 0 angle. This angle will maximize the heat during the winter solstice and minimize the heat during the summer solstice.

The angle of your roof will depend on your latitude. Find out your latitude and then add 23°. This number will be the angle of decline that you will need on your roof.

Solar greenhouses rely mostly on sunshine for growing, and the crops are not determined by weather conditions. For those growing in areas such as western China, this method has proved to be resilient and effective. The greenhouses have enabled farmers in diverse regions to vastly increase farming output, producing vegetables during a time of year that they otherwise wouldn’t have produced. The underground greenhouse method has consequently revolutionised the surrounding economy there.

Ma Junxian, from Guyuan City, makes at least 20,000 yuan (2,941 U.S. dollars) in yearly annual income by growing celery, broccoli and chilli throughout the year in his 667-square-meter greenhouse. The earnings are 10 times as much as what he is used to earning when he had been growing using more conventional farming methods which rely solely on the weather for a harvest.

The underground greenhouse method allows for natural insulation, while optimising solar absorbance. These partially subterranean greenhouses appear to be the best for growing winter horticultural crops, and have been adopted in numerous countries, such as Japan, Russia, Korea, and now even the United States. These underground greenhouses can be something built very small for an individual or family, or it can be much larger to accommodate for more commercial needs. But it has proven to be more beneficial for growers than conventional methods which are at the mercy of varying weather conditions. Cheaper than aquaponics, but more effort than urban homesteading, an underground greenhouse is almost universally viable, more than affordable, and ecologically smart.

Mind-boggling Underground Houses

1. Traditional Yet Under Ground

This home looks very traditional from the front. I couldn’t find the actual link where this home originated from, so you can only see the outside.

But when you look closer, you realize the home is actually built into a hill. Which means it has a traditional outer appearance while still being underground. Isn’t that neat?

2. The Backyard Hobbit House

Some people don’t build underground houses to live in all of the time. Often they are built as a private getaway or for protection from natural elements or war.

So if you would like to have your own underground hobbit house, then this tutorial could show you how to achieve this on your own in very vivid detail.

3. The Dutch Mountain Home

The Dutch Mountain home is very dreamy. From the outside, it looks like a basic wooden home built into the mountain.

But when you scroll through the pictures you quickly see how the inside has been transformed into this light and area space that seems very warm and inviting.

4. The Earth-Sheltered Home

This underground home is an absolute work of art. It looks pretty fancy by looking at the outside. Then you begin looking at the photos on the inside.

See, this person spent 18 years to build this work of art. But you can tell, this home isn’t your typical underground house. It truly is a masterpiece.

5. The Underground House or Shelter

These are basic computer plans for a small space that could be either your underground home or an underground place to seek shelter in the event of an emergency.

But when you dig into the plans you see that they are very detailed and have lots of wonderful off-grid qualities.

6. The Hobbit House

I’ve shared one person’s tutorial on building a hobbit house in your backyard above already. But this one gives you another view of the process.

So if you are looking for a quaint hobbit house to use as a full-time home or even as a shelter, then you’ll want to scroll through this tutorial.

7. The Modern Hobbit

This house can only be seen from the outside, so it’ll just have to be used for inspiration. It is also attached to an article that gives you a lot of benefits of living in an underground home.

But what I found so fascinating about this design is how you can still have a circular, underground hobbit style home with such a modern finish. It is truly a gorgeous idea.

8. The 70’s Style Bunker

This home looks as though it was a bunker from back in the 1970’s. From the outside, it has different areas of architectural charm.

But when you begin to view the inside you see how much care was put into designing this home. It is welcoming and looks to make for comfortable living.

9. The $50 Underground House

The man who is in the video touring this home is the author of the book The $50 and Up Underground House Book. The house that they are touring was originally built for $50.

However, they have since turned it into a mansion meant to withstand up to 200 mph winds! Isn’t that crazy how durable these homes can be?

10. The ‘Right Way’ Underground Home Tutorial

This isn’t exactly an underground house design, though they do give you a computer generated image to look over as you walk through the tutorial.

However, they do offer lots of great tips to make sure that if or when you build an underground home that you do it right so you can enjoy it for years to come.

11. The Invisible House

I really like this house design. It is meant to be built into the ground or a hill so that it is very difficult to be seen.

So if you are a prepper or just someone that would like a home or shelter that would be difficult for other’s to find, then this might be a really nice option.

12. The Umbrella Home

This is a really neat idea to have a self-sustainable home underground. This home design follows many of the traditional underground home designs.

But there is one small change. They create an umbrella under the earth that is meant to be a layer of insulation for the home so it’ll hold more cool and warm air as needed.

13. The One Bedroom Solar Underground Home

This home is another one that’ll just have to be used for inspiration because the site it originated from is no longer in business.

But as you can see from the floor plans, the home has a living room, bedroom, dining area, and also includes solar panels in the plan as well.

14. The Virtually Indestructible Underground Home

Do you want a home that is sturdy and can potentially withstand most natural disasters? If so, then you’ll want to tune into this tutorial.

Basically, this article shows multiple different underground varieties, but I like the one that has a nice little porch with it. It makes the home feel like a welcoming place that can also offer a lot of protection.

15. Underground Home Encased in Glass

There is a style of home known as the ‘American Pit House’ for an underground housing structure. It looks relatively simple and kind of on the plain side.

But these people amped it up by using this basic style of home and then encasing the whole thing in glass. It is really gorgeous.

16. Underground Shipping Container Homes

If you are looking for an underground house idea but would prefer to have something inexpensive and prefab, then consider one of these shipping container homes.

So this video walks you through multiple different options, and they are modern, unique, and look rather awesome.

17. Prefab Hobbit Homes

I don’t know about you, but when I see an underground home I suddenly have this horrible feeling of claustrophobia as I imagine my roof collapsing on top of me because I didn’t build the structure quite right.

But when I saw these prefab Hobbit houses, I knew someone had shared in the same fear and wanted to make underground building a little easier.

18. House in a Hill

We’ve all heard people talk about how they dream of living in a house on a hill when they grow up. I guess there was something regal about that at one point in time.

Well, these people took that dream one step further and built themselves a house in a hill. It is open, gorgeous, and has wonderful views.

19. The Wonders of an Underground Home

This article is a wonderful collection of the different interiors and exteriors you can have with an underground home. It also offers a few interesting facts as well.

So if you’d like to see the different wonders that underground houses can provide, then you’ll want to check out this resource.

20. Underground Houses and Off-Grid Living

This article is another amazing resource that will give you more insight and helpful facts if you are interested in living underground.

But I wanted to share with you also the image that they provide with the article. You can tell they have successfully built a two-story underground home that is hidden, yet gorgeous.

21. Silo to Underground Home

This is a great idea for those that are working on a tighter budget but still want to live underground.

Basically, if you find that building underground is out of your budget, then you could take an old silo and place it in the ground to form a nice underground home for less money.

22. The Underground Round House

This house is another really unique and gorgeous option for an underground home. Obviously, the majority of the home is underground.

But when you look at the front, it is rounded with lots of windows and rock features to really make the home pop.

23. The ‘Blended In’ Hillside Underground Home

This home is absolutely gorgeous. It has lots of natural light and gorgeous views to boot. It also seems to be quite spacious.

But what is so amazing about this gorgeous home is how well it is hidden into the hillside. This could provide you both comfort and protection as well.

Well, you now have over 20 different underground homes to view. They are all different and have different things to offer.

Also, you can see that you can make an underground home as simple or dolled up as you would like.

But I’d like to hear from you now. Would you consider living underground? If so, why? Do you already live underground? If so, do you have any tips for those considering it?

We love hearing from you. Just drop us a line in the comment section below.
