Our competition "Summer Season - 2006"
The year passed so quickly that I could analyze the results of my summer season at the dacha only before the last day of submission of materials to the competition announced by the magazine.
A year ago, I was also lucky, and I became the winner of the competition. Received a certificate as a prize firm "Mika", according to which I could choose seedlings in their nursery at a convenient time for me.
I was pleased with the assortment of seedlings, and the attitude towards the client there. But the main joy awaited me and my family members in the summer, when one of the apple trees selected as a prize at Mika and planted in my garden in spring, or rather, the Orlovsky Sinap apple tree bore 8 pieces of large green delicious apples. Thank you for such a prize!
The past summer cottage season has delighted our family with a splendid harvest of cabbage. Traditionally, we grow cabbage of different types and varieties - white cabbage: Glory, Gift, Blizzard - everyone knows them; Cossack - early ripening hybrid (ripens in 65 days); a magnificent hybrid of the Dutch selection of Rinda - a record head of cabbage grew in weight 7.5 kg.
The varieties were not forgotten red cabbage: Mars MC and Kalibos (Czech selection), Autoro (from Holland) - they are suitable for salads. The heads of these hybrids are less dense, but juicy and very tasty. Red cabbage helps to eliminate radioactive substances from the human body, improves blood composition. In the photo you can see part of our cabbage harvest. Very unusual appearance savoy cabbage varieties Jubilee - the leaves are beautiful, they will decorate any table.
Great material for decorating gardens and lawns until late autumn - decorative cabbage varieties: curly leaf Cadet, curly green and red Kai, Gerda, Decorative mix, Rose flower, Tokyo, Peacock. This cabbage continues to amaze with its beauty, unusual shape and color, it is similar to both a head of cabbage and a flower, it amazes with its ability to winter in the garden to a temperature of -10? С. Bouquets of leaves and heads of cabbage are original, beautiful and stand in the water for a long time. We love this ornamental cabbage for its beauty, but it is also nutritionally valuable, collard greens are rich in minerals and vitamins.
I have already talked about my summer cottage experiments, for example, about growing cucumbers in bottles. When outsiders see a solid cucumber freely placed in a bottle, there is no limit to surprise.
And last summer I grew a cucumber in a cabbage head. How can I do that?
Plant seedlings of cucumber next to the cabbage. When a small cucumber appears on the lash, carefully place it in the head of cabbage that is tying. The fruit of a cucumber develops well in a growing head of cabbage. Leave this head of cabbage intact, and cut it open in winter: it will contain a fresh green cucumber. I managed to do it, try it too.
To make cabbage less affected by pests, between its plants I plant onions and nasturtium, and I collect caterpillars by hand, I examine the plants every day.
There are other favorite crops: we plant pumpkins and zucchini of a wide variety of varieties. On May 11, our grandson was born, I planted a pumpkin, and by September 11, she grew up, gaining weight of 27 kg. My grandson was with me at the dacha, every day he watched her growth, they grew up together.
Of course, we planted cucumbers, peppers, carrots, beets, tomatoes. I was pleasantly surprised by the tomato hybrid Rosemary - 790 grams pulled the largest fruit, the rest were slightly inferior in weight, but were very tasty and beautiful. Carrots and beets grew excellently, if a year ago these vegetables were unsweetened because they were drowning in water, then last year's harvest was distinguished by excellent taste and size of root crops.
I always rejoice at any plant and wonder how such miracles grow from small seeds. Let all lovers of our glorious six hundred square meters always succeed and the harvests delight them with their beauty, deliciousness and size. I wish you all the best!

Good seedlings should have about 5 true leaves. Until the leaf outlet and we will bury it when planting. Make sure that the roots do not jerk up. After planting, squeeze the ground and water. When preparing the ridges, let's not forget that cabbage is very demanding on soil fertility. Up to 10 kilograms of rotted manure is applied per square meter, about 2 - 3 tablespoons of a mixture of mineral fertilizers and well dug up. Please note that cabbage over cabbage, that is, where it grew last year, should not be planted this spring. Pathogens accumulate in the ground. The cabbage fly larvae reproduce on the accidentally left stumps, on the roots. If suddenly after 10 - 15 days your seedlings begin to turn red and wither, then the cabbage fly larvae are already working here. And it will be necessary to rake the earth from the stem, destroy the larvae, then huddle higher, sprinkle with naphthalene. It's easier to take precautions ahead of time. For example, cover the planted seedlings with a transparent cap.
Cabbage is especially susceptible to soil acidity. In acidic lands, where horsetail, wild sorrel usually grow, you will not be able to get a harvest of gourmet cauliflower. Usually, gardeners once every 2 years add lime for digging, about 100 - 150 grams per square meter.
How to get rid of ants at their summer cottage
The location of the nests directly depends on the trees affected by aphids. They are built right next to them, because the ants feed on it. You can try to rid the tree of aphids, or you can simply keep the ants out of it by smearing the trunk with Alt glue or molasses. In addition, you can confuse insects by spreading sliced heads of garlic in their path. Apparently, ants, like vampires, are afraid of this smell. But among other things, the smell of garlic knocks the hunter ants off the trail to the food that the scout ants leave behind (they leave their smell on the paths).
You can call other representatives of the fauna to help you. Build small pools of water using car tires next to the tree where the anthill is located. Cut them in half along the tire, place them in small indentations in the ground with water. Birds will fly to this "watering hole" and peck at your tormentors.
Try to flood the nest. For this, solutions of insecticides, oil, boiling water, a solution of sugar or molasses are suitable. Never fill the nests with varnish or vinegar, this not only can harm the trees, but will make its fruits poisonous. One of the traditional ways is to sprinkle hot ash on the nest.
If killing ants has become a real hunt for you, make a couple of traps for them. Place several small containers of viscous sugar liquid near the ant's house. The ants will get stuck in it and either themselves will then change their location, or they will never again come to the place where you left the trap.

Waste incineration on site
Good afternoon, dear owners of garden, summer cottages, backyard plots!
Any even the smallest gardening economy is unthinkable without the formation of a certain mass of waste. They are made up of materials and objects of various origins and composition. When the owners have the opportunity, like in the city, to use the services of a company that takes waste to a landfill, then there is no particular problem.
But, unfortunately, this option for disposal of garbage is not always available, and then you have to solve the issue of waste disposal yourself. As a rule, this is the incineration of accumulated unnecessary materials. So, we will talk about waste incineration at the site today.
I want to start with the legal aspects. Be careful!
According to the law, it is forbidden not only to incinerate garbage on one's own site, but also to make fires for any purpose.
Fire safety rules allow you to burn garbage and other waste only strictly in places specially designated for these actions. These places must be located at a distance from buildings and structures at least 50 meters and must be agreed with a representative of the fire supervision.
It should be understood that for non-compliance with fire safety standards, in accordance with Article 20.4 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, administrative responsibility is provided, namely: an administrative fine is imposed on citizens in the amount of one thousand to one and a half thousand rubles for officials - from six to fifteen thousand rubles for legal persons - from one hundred and fifty to two hundred thousand rubles.
In addition, if as a result of your violation of fire safety, negative consequences arise for the environmental situation or, even worse, the life and health of people, or causes material damage to citizens or the state, a criminal case may be initiated under the relevant article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
The order of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia approved the procedure for using open fire and making fires on agricultural land and reserve land. I would like to bring the basic requirements of this document to prevent disastrous consequences.
The use of open fire should be carried out in specially equipped places, subject to the following requirements:
a) the place for using open fire should be made in the form of a pit (pit, ditch) not less than 0.3 meters deep and not more than 1 meter in diameter or a platform with a metal container firmly installed on it (for example: a barrel, tank, barbecue) or a container made of other non-combustible materials that exclude the possibility of flame spread and the loss of combustible materials outside the combustion center, with a volume of not more than 1 cubic meter. meters
b) the place of use of open fire should be located at a distance of at least 50 meters from the nearest object (buildings, structures, buildings, open storage, stacks), 100 meters - from a coniferous forest or separately growing coniferous trees and young growth, and 30 meters - from a deciduous forest or separately growing groups of trees
c) the area around the place of use of open fire must be cleared within a radius of 10 meters from dead trees, dry grass, dead wood, felling residues, other combustible materials and separated by a fire-fighting mineralized strip with a width of at least 0.4 meters
d) a person using an open fire must be provided with primary fire extinguishing means to localize and eliminate combustion, as well as a mobile communication device to call the fire department.
When using an open fire in a metal container or container made of other non-combustible materials, excluding the spread of flame and the fallout of combustible materials outside the combustion center, the minimum permissible distances provided for in subparagraphs "b" and "c" of paragraph 2 of this order may be halved ... In this case, the device of a fire-fighting mineralized strip is not required.
In order to localize the combustion process in a timely manner, the container intended for incineration of garbage must be used with a metal sheet, the size of which must allow the indicated container to be completely closed from above.
When using open fire and making fires for cooking in special non-combustible containers (for example: braziers, braziers) on garden land plots related to agricultural land, the fire-prevention distance from the combustion source to buildings, structures and other structures is allowed to be reduced to 5 meters, and the cleaning area around the tank from combustible materials - up to 2 meters.
In cases of execution of works on destruction of dry grassy vegetation, stubble, crop residues and other combustible waste, organization of mass events using an open fire, it is allowed to increase the diameter of the combustion center up to 3 meters. At the same time, the minimum permissible radius of the cleaning zone around the combustion center from dead trees, dry grass, dead wood, felling residues, and other combustible materials, depending on the height of the point of their location, should be determined in accordance with the appendix to this procedure.
During the entire period of using an open fire until the cessation of the smoldering process, control should be exercised over the non-spread of combustion (smoldering) beyond the focal zone.
The use of open fire is prohibited:
- when a special fire-fighting regime is established on the relevant territory
- upon receipt of information about the approaching unfavorable or dangerous for the life of people meteorological consequences associated with strong gusts of wind
- under the crowns of coniferous trees
- in a container, the walls of which have a fiery through burnout
- at a wind speed exceeding 5 meters per second, if an open fire is used without a metal container or a container made of other non-combustible materials, excluding the spread of the flame and the fallout of combustible materials outside the combustion center
- when the wind speed exceeds 10 meters per second.
In the process of using open fire, it is prohibited:
- to burn flammable and flammable liquids (except for liquids used for ignition), explosive substances and materials, as well as products and other materials that emit toxic and highly toxic substances during combustion
- leave the place of the source of combustion unattended until the complete cessation of combustion (smoldering)
- locate flammable and combustible liquids, as well as combustible materials near the source of combustion.
After using an open fire, the place of the combustion source should be covered with earth (sand) or flooded with water until combustion (smoldering) completely ceases.
What is the amount of garbage in the country? First, it is solid household waste, which includes cardboard boxes, cans, rags and more. Plant residues sometimes make up a significant proportion. Most of them are laid in a compost heap or pit, which is available on each site. But in no case should plants affected by infectious diseases be allowed to rot, since this is fraught with further spread of infection. Cut branches of trees also go into the fire, which are also not suitable for composting. Therefore, there is only one way out - to burn such plant raw materials.
There are different ways to incinerate garbage on the site. The most common are three: an open fire, burning in a metal barrel, and burning in a furnace.
Open fire for burning garbage
A place for a summer campfire must be chosen and prepared correctly. This should be an open area away from household buildings and trees. A depression is dug in the ground, in which a fire is made. The prepared garbage is burned gradually, adding portions to the fire. The best time for such waste disposal is a cloudy day with high humidity. Making a fire on a hot, dry day is undesirable due to the risk of accidental fire. Unfortunately, this is not the only disadvantage of open burning of garbage.
The disadvantages include the fact that diseased plants have to be stored on the site and stored this hotbed of infection until the moment of disposal. The destruction of the fertile layer at the site of the fire is also a negative consequence. This place has to be left exclusively for a fire or efforts must be made to restore it, filling up the fertile land.
Waste incineration in a metal barrel
The previous method is the most common, but the most unprofitable. An alternative solution can be a stationary or mobile oven. Enterprising gardeners use an ordinary iron barrel in this capacity. This design is, of course, safer and does not destroy the soil on the site. But over time, the metal burns out and the garden barrel oven becomes unusable. In addition, accidental sparks also pose a danger to buildings and landings on the site.
Burning garbage in a kiln
You can make your own and a more complex design than an ordinary barrel. For this, the oven is designed like a smokehouse. Smoke channels are built in the ground, through which hot air comes out of the furnace, gradually cooling. The upper part of the spent gas cylinder is cut off and, by attaching hinges to it, they turn it into a door. Thus, an impromptu firebox is obtained. A piece of metal pipe is welded on the side, which will serve as a chimney. The pipe must run on the ground to create air draft.
The firebox must also be on the ground. Its size, as a rule, is sufficient to accommodate large debris for incineration. The thick walls of the cylinder do not burn out for a long time and make the stove workable for a long time. In addition, the use of such a home-made stove allows not to accumulate a large volume of plant residues and waste on the site, but, if necessary, "turn on" the stove and safely carry out waste incineration on site, destroying unnecessary plant and other types of waste.
In favor of what method of disposal of garbage at the summer cottage to make a choice, the owner himself decides. The most important thing in this business is to carry out sanitary cleaning, observe fire safety rules and preserve the beauty and integrity of the personal plot. See you!
