Among the grape varieties, there are many varieties obtained as a result of the work of folk breeders. The developed hybrids are not inferior to the developments of scientists and specialists in terms of taste and resistance to diseases. One notable example is the Rochefort variety. Let's take a look at its description.

Description of the Rochefort grape variety

The hybrid was bred by an amateur breeder Pavlovsky E.G., who received a new variety as a result of crossing a pollinated mixture of Cardinal and Talisman pollen. Early ripening grapes with a growing season of 105-110 days.

The shoots of the plant are vigorous, reaching a height of 120-135 cm. The branches are densely leafy, the inflorescences are formed of two sexes, which ensures good pollination. Flowering begins in the first decade of June, and in July the first harvest can be harvested. 12-22 bunches are tied on one bush.

People's breeder Evgeny Georgievich Pavlovsky has bred more than 50 grape varieties. Among the most popular varieties: Ayut Pavlovsky, Super Extra, Korolek.

The variety is recommended for cultivation in the southern regions of the country. However, experienced gardeners are given a good harvest in the Moscow region and some central regions of Russia. And although the plant is frost-resistant, it is wrapped in preparation for winter.

Characteristics of berries

According to the characteristics of the berries and the bunch in general, it can be stated that the variety belongs to the representatives of the elite. Large dark purple brushes reach a mass of 400-1000 grams. An oval-shaped berry hangs up to 13 grams. with a diameter of 21 mm. The skin is of medium density, but thin, practically not felt when eating. In one berry there are only 3-4 large seeds, which makes it easy to find them.

The yield from the bush is 4-7 kg, with proper agricultural technology and a favorable climate, it is possible to remove up to 10 kg. And although Rochefort cannot be called high-yielding, the taste and commercial qualities of grapes outweigh the quantity indicator, on which the national breeder has relied.

The berry taste is saturated with different shades, among which the nutmeg note stands out. Juicy and fleshy pulp contains a good combination of sugar content (14-18%) and acidity (4-7%).

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Those gardeners who had experience in growing Rochefort grapes distinguish the following advantageous qualities of the variety:

  • early ripening of the crop;
  • excellent rooting and quick survival of cuttings;
  • good pollination due to the presence of heterosexual flowers;
  • plant frost resistance (withstands frost down to -23 °);
  • tolerance to diseases (mildew, oidium);
  • high appreciation of product and taste characteristics;
  • good transportability and long shelf life of plucked bunches.

In order to form a complete picture of the culture, it is worth noting the existing disadvantages:

  • relatively low yield;
  • the rapid formation of color is misleading about the ripeness of the berry;
  • weak resistance to phylloxera.

Outwardly ripe berries, judging by the rich color, need to spend some more time on the vine in order to fill with the sugar content of the concentration that is stated in the breeding characteristic.

The agricultural technology of the variety does not provide for complex and frequent events. When planting and growing a plant, it is enough to adhere to the following rules:

  • the place for the seedling is chosen in a well-lit place without drafts (the southern or south-western side of the capital structure is ideal);
  • if landing near a building is planned, it is recommended to maintain an indent of at least 1 m from the foundation;
  • with a high occurrence of groundwater, it will be necessary to equip drainage;
  • the landing time is planned for mid-September (plus or minus 2 weeks, depending on the climatic characteristics of the region), landing in the spring is possible (the established temperature must be at least 10 °);
  • an interval of 2 m is observed between the bushes;
  • pit parameters - depth not less than 80 cm, width - 65-80 cm;
  • at the bottom of the pit, a bedding is made from a mixture of fertile soil and humus (compost);
  • the seedling is immersed in the hole to the root collar, after which it is carefully covered with soil.

It is better to mulch the soil immediately after planting. In a humid environment, it will be much easier for the roots to take root.

Before starting planting work, it is necessary to dig up the soil, removing plant residues from it. They can hide pest larvae or spores. The dense structure of the clay area must be diluted with coarse river sand. If the soil environment is acidic, it is recommended to neutralize it with lime or dolomite flour.

You should also pay attention to the choice of a seedling. It should be a strong shoot with a root length of at least 15-25 cm and a stem thickness of 7-9 mm. Too long root system is pruned. This procedure stimulates the rapid development of the vine.

Care of young and mature vines

A feature of the Rochefort variety is its unpretentiousness to agricultural technology, but elementary care should still be carried out. Watering should be carried out as the soil dries out. Irrigation stops during the period of berry formation, as excess moisture can provoke skin cracking. After harvesting, the bushes are watered until the plant is prepared for winter (watering stops 2 weeks before the shoot is wrapped).

To prevent the soil from drying out in dry summers, it is recommended to moisten and loosen more often. The treated area can be covered with a layer of mulch, this helps to retain moisture in the soil. Wood chips or moss are used as mulch.

The soil is fertilized once a year with organic matter (humus, compost). During the growing season, it is enough to use top dressing in the form of a solution of wood ash or herbal tinctures. It is also appropriate to water it 1-2 times per season with tincture of poultry droppings.

The formation of the bush requires special attention. When pruning, you need to take into account the recommended number of eyes per shoot, the indicator should not exceed 30-35 eyes, otherwise the plant will be overloaded. 6-8 eyes are left on one vine.

As the vine develops, you will need to tie up the growing shoots so that they do not lie on the ground or other plants. When preparing grapes for winter, you should free the branches from under the support for wrapping with spruce branches, geotextiles or other natural insulation. The wrapped vine is buried with soil. It is better to take the soil at a distance from the bush so as not to open the root zone, otherwise the root system will die with severe frosts.

Reproduction methods

Reproduction of Rochefort grapes is carried out using seedlings and cuttings grafted to the stock.

Rules for planting seedlings:

  • dig a hole 2 weeks before planting (depth 80-100 cm);
  • pour a bucket of fertile soil into the depression first, then 2 buckets of humus / compost, then again a bucket of soil;
  • let the bedding stand for 2 weeks, then bury the seedling;
  • install an escape support in the hole;
  • water;
  • mulch the surface of the soil around the bush.

Rules for grafting cuttings to the stock:

  • cut off the old bush so that a stump of about 10 cm remains above the soil surface;
  • clean the cut surface of dirt;
  • make a cross-shaped split in the center of the hemp, in which to place the prepared stalk;
  • pull the stock tightly with a strip of fabric or twine;
  • cover the harness with wet clay.

Diseases and pests

The variety is distinguished by its tolerance to mildew and oidium. Immunity to phylloxera is not developed, therefore it is recommended to periodically carry out prophylaxis. If the pest is not neutralized, it can kill the vine. Signs of an insect attack are backward development, yellowing of the leaf.

It is not always possible to cure the affected plant, therefore it is better to do with preventive treatments. When parasites are detected, fumigators with prolonged action should be used, as well as drugs: Astellik, Fustak, Fozalon.

The main preventive measures against pests and diseases are in the correct choice of the planting site and soil. It is worth avoiding rocky areas, clayey soils, as sandy and sandy soils are more suitable for grapes.

The Rochefort grape variety will delight you with intensive development, early harvest and very tasty fruits. Beautiful purple bunches are also of aesthetic value, so gardeners often plant stems near gazebos or in a recreation area.

Each of them has a unique and inimitable taste, aroma and useful qualities. Even the most capricious amateur will be able to choose and decide which one he likes and deserves to grow on his site.

Breeding work

This hybrid form was obtained by the national breeder Pavlovsky E.G. The Talisman variety was used as a parent base, as a representative of the "Vostorgskaya group", it is the gene for resistance and large berries and the Cardinal variety, the genes of which were responsible for the taste and presentation. In addition, a mixture of pollen from resistant European-Amur varieties and hybrid forms of grapes was used.

Unlike the rest of the “Narsels,” Pavlovsky never overestimates the characteristics of his forms, and sometimes underestimates, and vice versa. So in the case of rochefort, a higher resistance to hybrid diseases was found.

Gardeners reviews

The Rochefort variety is distinguished by excellent taste, unpretentiousness and average yield. With good care, you can increase the fruiting of the bush. The vineyard must be treated against diseases and pests.

You can learn about the features of the Rochefort variety from the video:

Gardeners reviews

After visiting the vineyard, my friend liked the Rochefort variety. Decent stability and good marketability of bunches. Has already begun to stain (as of July 18). On my bush, the second growing season - I see good growth strength and stability. Next year I will expect signal fruiting.

Zelinsky Alexander

Rochefort grapes ... Variety - super: good growth vigor, disease resistance higher than stated. The berry is dense, very large, crispy, with a light nutmeg! The berry lasts two months on the bush. At the moment, I have planted 15 bushes.

R Pasha

In our specific conditions in Rochefort there is no trace of any nutmeg (even after hanging on the bushes for a long time), plus there is a strong pea of berries (like Cardinal's) in each bunch every year. The ripening period is really early, around August 10, but if you wish, you can pinch it earlier, the taste is grassy and the flesh is dense. It stains before it ripens.

For me, the Rochefort grapes are delicious. On my land, the Berry of the Lowlands is very similar to the taste of Rochefort, of course, the timing is different ... Everyone who has tried this variety on the site gives a high taste assessment. And what they write: "peas" - it is necessary to work with the bush ... Although I do not have "peas", I will not assert this fact, only the first fruiting.

Belikova Galina

This form of grapes appeared on our site in the first batch of seedlings from the author and has long been firmly established on the Kuban land. Over the years, I have never regretted that I have these grapes. Maybe because I like the "cardinal" taste of its berries ... The harvest is always stable from the bushes and without peas, which many other growers complain about. But for me it does not mature in any way in the stated 95 days, but somewhere in 105-110 days with a normal load. Bunches easily gain weight of 1 kg or more. I had to observe on farm plots where Rochefort is grafted on the Kober 5BB rootstock and clusters of 3-4 kg. Berries, depending on the care and age of the bushes, can be up to 20 g, with dense pulp and a slight aftertaste of nutmeg. The grapes themselves are transportable and have a good presentation. Resistance to diseases at the level of 3 points. I want to note one more feature of this grape: the buds open later than everyone else, which has a positive effect on the yield during recurrent frosts.

Fursa Irina Ivanovna

Rochefort has lived with me for three years, for me, the taste is simply unique, the bunch is very beautiful, the vine ripens perfectly, there are no problems with diseases with standard treatments, I will increase the number of bushes.

Konstantin K

Wasps and sparrows do not touch Rochefort for me. Very good quality for grapes. Yes, and good in terms of yield.

Alexander Kovtunov

Recently I had a chance to see Rochefort live. Believe me, the photos do not convey the true impression of these berries! Hefty purple balls, great view!

Rochefort is a consistently fruitful form, it is always well pollinated and the taste is pleasing.

Sergey 54

Rochefort is one of my favorite grapes. The strength of growth is great, the berry is large, tasty. The bunches are large.

Andrey Viktorovich

Most Rochefort growers are unequivocally happy with the purchase. This variety very successfully combines undemanding care with presentability and excellent taste of berries. Also among its undoubted advantages is good immunity. Accordingly, nothing supernatural is required from a gardener who wants to get a crop. But it is better to familiarize yourself with the important nuances of caring for a culture in advance.

Diseases and pests

During the study, the cultivar showed weak susceptibility to mildew. Resistance to powdery mildew and most fungal diseases is medium, to phylloxera - from medium to low.

Pea irrigation is not typical, but occurs in some regions. In case peas were observed in previous years, it is recommended to manually pollinate the flowers.

Rochefort grapes are not too picky about storage and transportation conditions, they retain their taste for a long time. Blagovest, Baikonur and Muscat Novoshakhtinsky have the same features.

It looks very elegant, and its great taste makes it one of the most exquisite desserts.
