How to grow and maintain this popular plant

At a gardening exhibition, I accidentally overheard a conversation between two women. One of them said: “Something with money in the house has become tense lately. It will be necessary to start the "money" tree again, the old one has died "... I wondered: what kind of tree is this that helps to solve financial problems? I went into the flower salon, and there they showed me a pot with a not very tall plant, whose leaves really looked like coins. The sellers explained that this is a fat woman, or crassula, which is popularly called a money tree.

It turns out that there is a belief that the fat woman brings income and good luck to the house. Some advise for this to bury a coin in a pot with a plant, and tie a red ribbon to one of the branches, then, they say, everything will be fine with finances in this house. Moreover, sometimes the fat woman is also called the tree of love and happiness.

Actually fat woman or crassula (Crassula) is an ornamental deciduous plant and belongs to the genus succulents from the family Fatty... It really looks quite original: a bush or tree, the branches of which are decorated with many round, thick, juicy leaves.

In its homeland in South Africa, it blooms, sometimes it happens, and it blooms on the windowsill. The flowers of this and other types of bastard are mostly small - white, yellowish, rarely pink.

In addition to this species, they are also often grown fat woman silver and oval fat woman... They are also called money tree.

Care Tips

Lighting. Fat women, like African women, are very demanding on lighting. It should be bright, intense, direct sunlight is desirable. These plants love a lot of light, sun both in winter and in summer. But in summer, in the bright sun, the leaves can turn red or acquire an almost brick shade. This is not dangerous, but burns are possible in green-leaved varieties; in varieties of variegated, especially with red spots - such consequences do not happen.

If the plant has been deprived of good sunlight throughout the winter, then in the spring it is necessary to accustom it to the bright sun gradually, first slightly shading, and then removing the shading for a while. It should be borne in mind that the following windows are suitable for the fat woman: east, not shaded from the street, south-west and even north-west. Plants located on windows facing south and west need to be shaded if necessary, for example, with a mosquito net. Northern windows are not suitable for almost all types of fat women.

Temperature. It is desirable to be moderate, and in summer, on hot days, it is better to place the plants on the floor, where it is slightly cooler. In winter, fat women have a rest period at a temperature of + 8 ... + 12 ° C, with a dry content, i.e. without watering. Permissible winter temperature minimum + 7 ° С. In summer, it is best to keep the plants outdoors on the balcony or in the garden. When wintering in too warm conditions, the bastard loses its leaves and decorative attractiveness (the shoots are stretched out, the leaves become smaller).

Watering. Moderate in spring and summer is needed, since autumn watering is reduced, and in winter fat women practically do not water. The frequency of watering depends on the temperature, but in any case, the soil should dry out fairly quickly. If it is constantly damp, it means that the soil is incorrectly selected (too dense, caked, not loose) or the volume of the pot is too large. In addition, water should never remain in the pan.

Fertilizer. From late spring to mid-summer, plants are fed with a special fertilizer for cacti and succulents once a month.

Air humidity. Fat women are resistant to dry air, but periodic spraying will not harm them. In addition, it will be useful for hygienic purposes, helping to wash away dust. For the same purpose, from time to time it is necessary to wipe the leaves of the bastard from dust in order to facilitate the access of sunlight.

Planting and transplanting a money tree

Most often, flower growers buy a fat woman in flower shops. It is already growing in a pot, and the plant will need to be transplanted into a large container in a year, when it is still growing up.

Reproduction. But it is quite possible to grow a money tree on your own, if you take a stem cutting or even a leaf from an adult plant from friends or acquaintances. Both the leaves and cuttings are dried for two to three hours, and then planted in the prepared soil. You can also use one more method - place the stalk or leaf in a glass of water until the roots appear. Usually this plant takes root quickly.

For planting, you can use purchased soil for cacti, it is also well suited for succulents. Or you can cook it yourself. This requires a mixture of 1 part of sod land, 3 parts of leaf, 1 part of peat land, 1 part of coarse, sifted sand. At the bottom of the pot, good drainage is required, for example, from expanded clay or cork, in order to prevent excessive waterlogging.

Transfer. For transplanting adult and old very large plants, the soil mixture is needed the same, but there should be 2 parts of sod soil there. It must be remembered that the leaves of fat women are very fragile and easily break off when transplanting plants, so they must be handled with care.

Young plants are transplanted annually, old ones - in a year. After transplanting, watering is very careful - little by little, so as not to cause rotting of the roots. It is useful to add brick chips and pieces of birch charcoal to the soil, as well as baking powder - vermiculite.

The root system of fat women is rather weak, superficial, the roots are thin, so the plants do not need large pots for planting. But some specimens have a thick, heavy trunk, and if they are planted in a small pot, then such plants can fall and break. They just need to be planted in large pots, and on their bottom, for stability, it is necessary to lay drainage from stones or one heavy stone, and then fill up a light drainage - wine cork, expanded clay or polystyrene up to the middle of the pot. After that, the plant itself is placed in it and the earthen mixture prepared for the fat woman is poured.

Types of fat women

As noted above, in nature there are several hundred species of this plant, but most often in living quarters and in offices you can find several types of fatty woman:

Tree fat womanMoney Tree or cotyledon arborescent (Crassula arborescens) - originally from Southwest and South Africa. It is a succulent plant with a thick, round trunk lignified from below and many densely leafy branches. Its rounded, like shiny coins, sessile leaves are thick, fleshy, dark green with a grayish tint (sometimes with reddish edges) with a dotted surface. With good care, this fat woman grows in the house for many years, reaching a height of up to one and a half meters. Only after ten years of cultivation, white or pink flowers can appear at the ends of the stems.

Oval fat woman (Crassula ovata) Is a small tree-like succulent plant that is very easy to grow. On its short branches are fleshy, oval-shaped, shiny green leaves, sometimes with a red edge. In well-lit places, this plant forms racemose inflorescences of small, star-like white flowers. In large pots, it reaches a height of 60 cm or more. In summer it needs good watering.

Fat woman silver (Crassula argentea) - a small succulent tree, reaching in nature 1-2 m in height, and the trunk - up to 30 cm in thickness. Has a profusely branching crown. Its leaves are elliptical or obverse-lanceolate, 2-6 cm long and 1-2.5 cm wide. They are bright green, shiny, sometimes reddening along the edges, with silvery dots on the upper side. The flowers are about 1 cm long, white with a pinkish bloom.

This species is one of the most common in indoor culture, it is also known as the purslane bastard.

The healing properties of the fat woman

Despite the popularity of the money tree, most people do not know that it also has medicinal properties. In folk medicine, the fat woman is used in the treatment of wounds, cuts, abscesses, since it has good bactericidal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that are not inferior in strength to aloe.

It is also used in the treatment of herpes, tonsillitis, arthritis.

However, it must be remembered that arsenic is contained in a high concentration in the fat woman, therefore it is not recommended to abuse the internal intake of medicinal preparations based on this plant. In case of an overdose, vomiting, diarrhea, and disturbances of consciousness are observed.

The use of fatty juice juice for wounds, cuts, abscesses. To do this, you need to take a few leaves of the bastard, grind them into gruel, trying not to lose juice. Then this gruel must be evenly distributed over the surface of the gauze, covered with another piece of gauze and applied to the affected area. The dressing should be changed every 4 hours.

Money tree: care

Crassula is very unpretentious in care. In the spring and summer he loves warmth, fresh air, sunbathing, and in winter he prefers a temperature not higher than + 15 degrees, but preferably +10.

In summer, it is best to take the money tree out to the balcony or garden. It can survive a short-term drop in temperature even up to - 2 degrees. Does not like to grow near heating radiators.

The dormant period for the money tree lasts from September to February. It favorably affects the well-being of the fat woman, accelerates growth. During rest, the plant is placed in conditions with a temperature of +10 - +15 grams with good lighting, rarely watered.

If the money tree is not satisfied with a dormant period, it will begin to stretch its shoots, and the leaves will begin to fall off.

How to care for the money tree

The fat woman tends to accumulate water reserves in the leaves - this helps her to survive in arid natural conditions in her homeland - in the tropics of Africa. The watering mode can be set by yourself: it is important that the earthy clod does not dry out. Remember that an excess of moisture for a fat woman is more dangerous than a lack of it, especially in the autumn-winter period. Excess moisture makes the indoor money tree vulnerable to fungal diseases, as a result of which the leaves of the bastard darken and fall off.

Seat selection

The fat woman loves sunlight, but will feel best in a small shade. The indoor money tree periodically needs to be turned to the sunlight in different directions so that the fat woman grows symmetrically. In summer, a fat woman can tolerate extreme heat, but in winter the optimum temperature for her is plus 15 degrees.

Top dressing and transplanting

In the summer, every two to three weeks, the fat woman needs to be fed. The rest of the time, the plant also needs feeding, but not more than once a month. Top dressing is best done immediately after watering, while the soil is still wet. Ready-made fertilizers for cacti and succulents are suitable for feeding. Plant transplantation is usually required every two to three years. As a soil substrate, a special nutrient substrate for cacti is best suited. But you can make the mixture yourself by taking leafy soil, sand and humus in equal proportions.

The fat woman has a superficial root system, so the pot for planting is selected wide and not very deep, it is best that the diameter of the pot corresponds to the diameter of the crown. A narrow and deep pot can significantly slow down tree growth.

Formation of the crown and trunk

The classic shape of the crown and trunk for a fat woman is the shape of a tree. But in order for the fat woman to grow into a lush tree, the crown needs to be formed - pinch the leaves. How to do it correctly? Wait until three or four pairs of leaves grow on the branch and a new bud appears. It needs to be removed - pinched. After a while, two or three new buds will appear at the site of the removed bud - these are new branches. If only one new kidney is formed, it must be pinched again.

Do I need to shape the trunk of a money tree? The lower leaves growing from the woody trunk do not need to be torn off. These leaves will eventually fall off on their own, and you get a powerful, beautiful trunk.

Reproduction of a fat woman

The fat woman reproduces well. Even from a leaf it is not difficult to get a new capable plant. Reproduction using cuttings is also not particularly difficult - we tear off or cut off the shoot we like from the tree, dry it a little and put it in a glass of water. Two to three weeks after the roots appear, the cutting can be planted in a pot with prepared soil.

Diseases and pests

The fat woman is practically not susceptible to disease, but from excessive watering, rotting of the root system can occur.

At the same time, the trunk becomes soft, the leaves and branches sag, the plant is not stable. To get rid of root rot, carefully remove the plant from the pot, trim the rotten roots, and sprinkle the slices with charcoal.

From insects - pests, which are very rare, but can also infect the fat woman, chemical preparations help well: "Aktara", "Fitoverm".

Sometimes pests enter the flower along with the soil, so it is recommended to steam the soil in a water bath or bake it in the oven before planting.

Fat woman and feng shui

Due to its round, fleshy leaves and the ability to attract positive energy, the fat woman is called the money tree.

If you want to have a fat woman, a magic talisman to attract financial well-being, then you will have to raise her yourself. Moreover, the stalk of the bastard must be plucked secretly or purchased a young plant in the store. A store-bought adult money tree will not have the same effect as a small stalk lovingly grown by you.

It is also very important to correctly position the money tree in the house. The best place for him would be the southeast direction - this is the zone of wealth in feng shui. Activation of the money tree will enhance the magical effect of attracting financial luck. It can be done as follows: when planting a young plant, bury a coin in a pot. To do this, you can take a special Chinese coin, but Russian ones are also suitable, for example, 5 or 10 metal rubles.

Another way to activate the money tree: hang three Chinese coins tied with a red ribbon on the plant - the red ribbon will enhance the effect of the talisman.

Which of the activation methods to choose is up to you, in principle, you can use two at once.

From the very beginning, say affectionate words to your pet, do not skimp on compliments. The money tree will surely reciprocate you - it will grow and develop, and you will always have money.

A fat money tree, subject to simple care rules, lives for a very long time, over the years it becomes stronger and in all its appearance really resembles a real tree with a powerful trunk and a spreading crown. And sometimes, but this happens quite rarely, the fat woman blooms. Then, according to belief, its owner is guaranteed one hundred percent financial success! Having reached the cherished heights, do not forget about your living talisman in the form of a small tree with leaves that look like coins.

Tree fat woman

View like fatty tree (Crassula arborescens) belongs to the genus Crassula, Crassulaceae family. This plant is endemic and in nature it can be found only in South Africa at the Western Cape.It usually grows on sunny, hilly slopes, sometimes forming fairly large colonies.

Such a succulent stands out from the rest in that it has a squat and rather thick trunk. The bark on it is smooth green in color, and on its surface there are traces of scars that remain from dead leaves. Thanks to this feature, the fat woman is similar to a tree with a rather lush crown. The height of an adult plant can reach 3 meters. Its leaves are simple, fleshy, almost petiolate, whole-edged and opposite. They seem to be a little inflated. The slightly curved leaf reaches 2 to 5 centimeters in length and has a rounded-oval shape. The leaf plate is painted in a greenish-bluish color, and on its surface there is a layer of white waxy bloom. In this case, along the edge of the leaf is painted in burgundy red.

In nature, such a fat woman blooms in the spring. However, when grown indoors, flowering is a rare event. The small five-petalled pinkish-white flowers are star-shaped. They are collected in axillary inflorescences that have the shape of a brush. When the plant has bloomed, it will produce 6mm oval fruits containing many small seeds.

This plant has 2 subspecies. Namely, treelike crassula, subspecies treelike (Crassula arborescens ssp.arborescens) and crassula treelike, subspecies undulatifolia (Crassula arborescens ssp. Undulatifolia). In this case, the second subspecies has slightly wavy leaves that grow on the shoot almost vertically upwards. These subspecies grow in different habitats that do not overlap. So, the first of the subspecies grows in the territory from the province of KwaZulu-Natal and Swaziland to the Small Karoo, and the second - in the southern regions of Klein and in the mountains of the Eastern Cape.

The tree fat woman is relatively popular among flower growers. Such a flower is grown not only because of its attractive appearance, but also because of the existing belief. It lies in the fact that the fat woman is able to attract luck and wealth into the house. It is also popularly called the "money tree".

Brief information about indoor plant

The genus name comes from the Latin word crassus - "thick", "fleshy". This characterizes the appearance of leaves and stems.

Types and varieties of fat women

Across the globe, but more in South Africa, there are more than 300 species of succulent herbaceous plants, dwarf shrubs and shrubs of this genus.

Crassula portulaca, Crassula portulaceae, crassula ovata

The most common species, the tree-like stem of which reaches more than 1 m. The leaves are up to 5 cm long, about 2 cm wide, dark green. The flowers are white or pink.

Crassula arborescens

It differs from the purslane bastard in larger sizes, less rounded, bluish leaves, 8 cm long and 5 cm wide, and less often formed aerial roots. The flowers are white, turning pink with age, small, in the apical paniculate inflorescences.

Crassula tetragona

A semi-shrub with weak, thin, often lodging shoots, covered with numerous brownish aerial roots. Leaves are short-styled, fleshy, about 4 cm long, 0.4 cm wide, rounded in cross section.

Fat girl care

Fat women are unpretentious in care, but photophilous. Some species require direct sunlight.

In winter, they are kept at temperatures up to +15 ° C. Watering is moderate and regular in summer, sparse in winter. At low air temperatures, it is better to stop watering altogether. In between waterings of adult plants, the soil in the container should dry out. When watering young plants, the clod of earth is constantly kept slightly moist.

Top dressing is done in the warm season once a month.

Transplanted as the substrate is depleted, in the spring every 2-3 years. For planting choose wide low containers. A soil mixture is used from turf and leaf soil, sand, peat (1: 1: 1: 0.5).

May be affected by mealybugs.

Reproduction of a fat woman

The bastard is propagated throughout the year by leafy and stem cuttings. The cuttings are pre-dried for a day, then planted in a soil mixture of leafy earth and sand (1: 0.5) and rooted at high humidity.

There is a belief that Tree fat woman, or money tree (Crassula arborescens) attracts good luck and financial prosperity to the house. This plant is considered a wonderful wedding gift. It is decorated with gold and red threads, coins, metallized paper and presented to the newlyweds.

Caring for a tree fat woman at home

Such a plant is undemanding to care for and does not differ in a capricious character. It can be grown quite easily by both experienced flower growers and beginners.

This is a very light-loving plant. For him, it is recommended to choose a well-lit place, while the presence of direct rays of the sun is mandatory. It is recommended to put it on a window of south-west or south-east orientation. When placed on a south-facing window, the fat woman will need shading from the midday rays of the sun in the summer. Otherwise, sunburn may form on the surface of the leaves.

When placed on northern windows, such a plant will develop and grow quite normally. However, its stems will be less massive and longer, and the crown will lose its spectacular fluffiness.

Temperature regime

Such a flower will grow and develop normally if in the warm season it is provided with a temperature regime of 22 to 30 degrees. In winter, it needs a coolness of 10 to 12 degrees. If it is warmer in the room at this time, this will lead to stretching of the shoots and the death of some of the foliage. To prevent this, during a warm winter, you need to arrange additional lighting for the plant. To do this, you will need powerful artificial lighting similar to solar. Daylight hours in this case should be equal to about 10 hours.

It should be remembered that the tree bastard reacts extremely negatively to drafts and sudden changes in temperature. In the warm season, it is recommended to move it outside. In this case, you should choose a place for it, protected from precipitation, but at the same time letting in a sufficient amount of sunlight.

How to water

During intensive growth, moderate watering is required. So, experts advise watering the plant only after 2/3 of the soil in the container is dry. In winter, watering should be sparse, but the earthen coma should not be allowed to completely dry out.

Air humidity

This flower is quite suitable for living in conditions of not too high humidity. Moreover, it does not need to be humidified from the sprayer even during the heating season. For hygienic purposes, a warm shower is recommended. However, this procedure should be carried out carefully so as not to damage the wax coating on the foliage.

Earth mixture

This plant is not very demanding on the soil mixture. So, a suitable soil should be loose, allow water and air to pass through, and be well drained. You can buy ready-made soil for planting at the store. You will need a succulent and cactus mix. If you wish, you can do it yourself, for this by combining sheet, clay-sod and humus soil, as well as coarse river sand in a ratio of 1: 2: 1: 1.

It is recommended to plant a fat woman in a fairly wide and low container. The fact is that it has fibrous superficial roots. Don't forget to make a good drainage layer at the bottom. To do this, you can use broken clay shards or expanded clay.

Top dressing is carried out quite carefully. It is necessary to fertilize the plant from mid-spring to the beginning of the autumn period 1 time in 4 weeks. To do this, use a special fertilizer for succulents and cacti. In winter, fertilizers cannot be applied to the soil.

Transplant features

While the plant is young, it should be transplanted every year. It is carried out in the spring and takes a container slightly larger than the previous one. Adult specimens are transplanted once every 3 or 4 years.

Reproduction methods

Can be propagated by stem as well as leafy cuttings; in rare cases, seeds are used for this. Carefully separate the cutting and plant it in a 1: 1 peat-sand substrate. Such a procedure is carried out in the spring. Under favorable conditions, full rooting will occur after about 3 months. Watering should be very sparse. So, you just need to moisten the substrate a little.

Before you start sowing seeds, study the instructions on the package or in the special literature.

Pests and diseases

Resistant to pests. In rare cases, a spider mite can settle. To destroy it, use fitoverm or actellic.

The plant can hurt due to a variety of rot, which appear as a result of improper watering or due to high humidity.

Attention! It is impossible to ingest parts of this plant inside, because it contains a high content of arsenic.

Types and varieties

The species diversity of Crassula is great - more than 300 species. Some varieties are cultivated only in greenhouses, others are grown exclusively indoors.

In home floriculture, fat women are divided into 3 groups:

  • treelike
  • spike or columnar
  • creeping or ground cover.

Each group is rich in its own varietal variety.

Tree fat women

The most frequently grown species by flower growers. Miniature trees with a beautiful curly crown on a thick stem are an adornment of any interior.

Let's consider the most common varieties.

Oval or Ovata

A shade-tolerant, not very capricious variety of Crassula to care for. The height of an adult tree varies from 50 to 100 cm. Many branches leave the lignified stem. The color of the stem changes over time from green to brown.

Evergreen leaves have a characteristic gloss, some have a reddish border around the edge. Elliptical leaves are attached directly to the stem, they retain a lot of moisture.

Succulent blooms in winter with small white flowers-stars, which are collected in umbrella inflorescences. The people affectionately call the perennial "coin tree", "krasulya" "bear's ear".

Purslane (Portulacea)

It is characterized by rapid growth, can reach a height of 2 meters with a trunk thickness of 30 cm. Many aerial roots are formed on the trunk and branches.

The fleshy leaves of a bright green color resemble an ellipse. The room practically does not bloom. Small white-pink flowers bloom in paniculate inflorescences.

Silver (Argentea)

It resembles an oval crassula. The difference is in the color of the leaves, which have a silvery hue.

Elongated leaves, abundantly covering the shoots, fall very rarely.

Ovata Minor

A compact, slow-growing species of Crassula. The dark green background of the leaves is decorated with a reddish border around the edges. Small oblong leaves: they reach 1.5 cm in length and 1 cm in width. The plant looks original in mini-gardens.

Milky (Lactea)

A semi-shrub in nature reaches a height of 60 cm, indoors - a maximum of 30 cm.On large green leaf plates, white dots are visible at the edges, hence the name.

At the base, the leaves are wide, pointed towards the top. Old foliage falls off, exposing the shoots. The plant blooms profusely in winter with white fragrant flowers.

Ovata cv / Hummels Sunset

Differs in characteristic yellow-red color of leaves. In insufficient light, the foliage changes color, becoming green.

Arboreal (Arborescenc)

An adult tree reaches a height of about 1.5 meters. The size of the oblong leaves is 5x7 cm. From above they are bluish-gray, from below they are reddish. The leaves are juicy, fleshy, with a glossy sheen. In indoor conditions it blooms very rarely.

Spike-shaped (columnar) fat women

They got their name for the original picturesque appearance. Their straight trunk practically does not branch. The leaf plates are located on the trunk in pairs, grow together, covering the entire stem, as if they were strung on it.

Perforata (Perforata)

The maximum height of the bastard is 20 cm. The stem with leaves reaches 3 cm in diameter. Rhomboid leaf plates cover the stem in pairs.

Their color is light green, the edge of the leaf is red. In winter, white inflorescences bloom at the top of the stem. Can be grown as an ampelous plant.

Grouped (Socialis)

A stunted view of a spike-shaped fat woman with thin, strongly branching stems. The leaves are medium-sized, smooth, rounded, about 5 cm long, colored bluish-green. The edge of the leaf blade is pubescent. Growing up, the fat woman forms a dense pillow.

Flowers open at the tops of the stems, their color is white-pink.

Montrose (Lycopodioides monstrosa)

The stems of the plant grow asymmetrically, and outwardly the bastard looks like a cactus. The stems are covered with triangular-shaped leaves, yellow-green in color. The thickness of the stem with leaves is only 0.5 cm.

The height of the crassula does not exceed 10 cm. The leaves are thick, tetrahedral, completely hiding the trunk. Silvery blotches are visible on green-gray leaves.

Creeping (ground cover) fat women

They are characterized by rapid growth, filling all the free space that is allotted for them.

A bizarre shrub, the height of which does not exceed 25 cm, looks like a plow or coral. Fleshy shoots spread. They are completely covered with many thin pointed leaves, which, like scales, densely stick around the stem. If the flower is constantly in bright light, then the green color of the leaves takes on a reddish tint. In the garden, it can be planted as a lawn or a beautiful backdrop for other plants.

Spot (Picturata)

Ampelnaya crassula with strongly branching shoots. Leaves 1.5 cm long, 0.8 cm wide, have a green tint. Red dots appear on the green surface of the leaf. The edge of the leaf is covered with thin cilia.

Rounded / Rosette (Orbicularis / Rosularis)

Herbaceous perennial with leaf plates, collected in rosettes, quickly tightens the entire free surface. Fleshy leaves of a light green color in length grow up to 2.5 cm, they sharpen to the top.

Scion (Sarmentosa)

Strongly branching Crassula variety with unusual toothed leaves.

The color of the leaf combines two green shades, it can change depending on the lighting. One meter long stems spread over the soil and take root easily. The leaves are large - 3.5 cm.
