Below is a list of pests. Each article describes how to identify a specific pest, how to deal with it, what preventive measures need to be taken to prevent pests from damaging plants.

Plants against pests

To protect yourself from annoying mosquitoes, flies, rodents and other pests, you can do without chemicals. Poisons used against mice and rats, if misused, are dangerous to children and pets. Nature has endowed plants with an abundance of properties useful for people. Among them there is a real weapon against rodents and insects. Why not take advantage of these gifts of nature? Insects are sensitive to odors. The aroma of plants, which seems pleasant to us, is simply unbearable for flying insects.

You can plant plants in your garden and at home, which will scare off many pests, insects, and rodents. Many examples can confirm that the phytoncides of many plants are active. Take at least the simplest one. The vase contains a large bouquet of bird cherry or white lilies. The scent fills the room. But you should not leave these flowers here overnight, otherwise in the morning you will wake up with a severe headache. The culprit will be phytoncides, their effect is very strong. Volatile phytoncides of the green belt put forward a strong barrier to pathogenic microbes. They have the ability to kill bacteria from a distance.

Residents of the Caucasus know well that sleeping under a walnut tree is not worth it: sleep will be bad, and the next day your head will hurt. Walnut leaf phytoncides repel flies, mosquitoes and other insects. If the cut bird cherry leaves are put under a glass cover and a fly or a mouse is placed there, then after a while the animals will die. Bird cherry phytoncides even kill rats. On the leaf of bird cherry and linden, microbes of Staphylococcus aureus die. Poplar and birch leaves destroy microbes the fastest (within 3 hours).

It is desirable that at least one geranium bush grows in the house. Fragrant pelargonium / geranium /, the inhabitant of our windowsills, has the strongest repelling effect against flying insects. She disinfects the premises and drives away flies. On the balcony, on the terrace or in the garden, you can put a couple of geranium pots. Lavender is no less good, but only when it blooms, so it is unlikely to be useful in areas with a temperate climate. If you put eucalyptus or myrtle in a room, then you won't find flies, mosquitoes and many microbes there.

It is known that insects do not tolerate the smell of tomato foliage and, having felt it, fly away. The scent of tomato greens is a wonderful natural repellent. Place a few pots of tomato bushes on your balcony or in front of windows for a good mosquito barrier. Tomatoes are one of the few plants that are almost completely immune to the attack of harmful insects. The special specific smell characteristic of the green parts of this plant in itself is already sufficient to keep many insects at a respectful distance.

A natural fumigator against midges will serve as a fireproof bowl with burned pounded dry sage leaves, a special spiral or incense sticks with the smell of lavender, sandalwood or geranium. Mosquitoes also dislike the smell of cloves, anise and eucalyptus. Moisten a cotton swab with the oil of these plants and put it on the windowsill. You can also use clove oil, anise oil, or eucalyptus oil on exposed body parts. The smell of cedarwood oil repels not only mosquitoes, but also flies and cockroaches.

In addition to those listed, the deterrent agents include the smell of valerian, freshly picked walnut leaves, as well as tobacco smoke and smoke from slightly dried juniper needles, pine or spruce cones. When cleaning floors and window frames, you can add a little kerosene to the water: flies do not like its smell and fly away. Flies do not tolerate the smell of wax, turpentine, castor oil, and most of all, kerosene. To prevent flies from flying into the room through the windows, you can grease the window frames with vinegar, put a bouquet of tansy, geranium on the windowsill, and plant bird cherry under the windows.

Chamomile (medicinal) - against most garden pests. In the fight against mice, you can use the smell of pharmacy chamomile. To expel annoying rodents from your home, it is enough to sprinkle dry chamomile on the floor. A house pest of carpets and fur coats, moths will go hungry if you store walnut leaves in cabinets and under carpets. The flowers of fragrant woodruff serve the same purpose.

Elderberry was also popularly considered the best remedy for harmful insects, mice and rats. This feature has long been noticed by the villagers and therefore specially planted it near grain barns. The fruits of the black elderberry are edible, and the red elderberry is a delicious food for birds. The leaves of this shrub, falling off, fertilize the soil well. If you grow gooseberries or currants, then you just need to find a place in the garden and plant an elderberry bush in the fall. Next to the elderberry, gooseberries and currants will be safe.

It has long been used to fight cockroaches with the help of a red elderberry. To do this, in the spring, when the buds of the berry grow, branches from last year's growth are cut and laid out in 2-3 twigs in places where insects accumulate. The cockroaches will soon disappear. Only red branches need to be cut. They are valid for up to two years. Many garden pests are afraid of its smell, like fire. Fresh red elderberry branches brought into the room are also considered a good mosquito repellent.

Blackroot fights against mice and rats. There are plants that drive away mice and rats with their smell. It is a medicinal black root. People call it “the tongue of a dog”: its leaves really look like a dog's tongue. Rodents cannot stand the smell of this plant, which smells like mice. The fresh root is especially strong. It is enough to scatter bunches of blackroot - mice and rats will leave your home.

Everyone knows a herbaceous perennial with golden yellow flowers - large celandine. It appears with the arrival of swallows and withers with their departure. Celandine contains a toxic milky juice rich in alkaloids and organic acids. Its grass is used as a reliable insecticidal agent against pests of garden and horticultural crops. Dry grass powder is used to pollinate vegetables against flea beetles. The grass is placed on lit heaps of garbage to fumigate orchards against copperweed and vegetable gardens against cabbage, turnip whites and other butterflies. Celandine is widely used against harmful insects. A phytoncidal infusion is prepared from fresh or dry grass, with which plants are sprayed against aphids, honeydew, thrips and scale insects.

Houseplant care

Caring for indoor plants at home, especially growing, advice, recommendations, observations.

A variety of plants live in our apartments: whimsical and not so, exotic and popular, there is a place for each of them. But how to properly care for them, how to prepare the soil, how to deal with pests, you will learn from our section: "Caring for indoor plants".

The talent for plant breeding is not given from birth. For proper care of indoor plants, first of all, personal interest, sensitivity, attention, experience are needed. As a rule, you can always help a plant if you know what it needs.

It is necessary to learn to "talk" with plants, to understand their silent requests, to prevent them from giving distress signals, to meet their needs, to water properly, feed, illuminate, warm - all this becomes second nature with experience. After all, each plant is unique! And we must understand this.

Natural fertilizers to indoor flowers

A guest who is not invited cannot come to your house by herself, you.
Why do the tips of the leaves of indoor plants dry?
Man is made in such a way that it is vital for him to surround himself with vegetation. We fill apartments and offices with indoor flowers. Often going into a flower shop, we buy a flowerpot we like, without even thinking whether we can provide it with the proper conditions. Bringing home, we put it in a free place, and enjoy, but.

Fertilizers and fertilizers for flowers
The need for nutrients is most acutely felt by indoor plants in early spring, including on the eve of transplantation, when the soil is depleted.

Preparing plants for winter
In November, winter begins for potted plants. This is the most unfavorable period for them, which is characterized by short, often cloudy days and long warm nights. Plants suffer from a lack of light in combination with an excess of heat and consume nutrient reserves accumulated over the summer.

Hydroponics application
Hydroponics is the technology of growing plants without soil on artificial substrates using nutrient solutions. At the same time, the plant receives from the solution all the necessary nutrients in the right quantities and in exact proportions.

Seven basic rules of plant care
Basic rules for caring for plants at home. All the main processes that ensure the vital activity of the plant (light, water, moisture, feeding, transplanting, land for flowers, etc.)

Soil mixes
Soil is a vital element for plants to get the nutrients they need. Therefore, the choice of an earthen mixture becomes the main factor when growing indoor plants.

Substrate elements
The main elements of substrates for the cultivation of indoor plants. If you want to prepare earthen mixtures on your own, it is recommended to make stocks of various components, from which you can make a nutrient mixture of the desired composition. To prepare the earth mixture, various natural ingredients are mixed.

Synthetic materials
Synthetic materials in the composition of soil for indoor plants, which are increasingly found in growing and caring. Natural or artificial substances with stable characteristics, amenable to control, are added to the substrates.

Soil properties
Many people believe that any land is suitable for domestic plants, as long as it is fertile, but this is not at all the case. In fact, the soil in the pot is not in good conditions because it is often washed out. At the same time, the soil becomes compacted, water absorption worsens, and oxygen supply to the roots is disrupted. Water stagnates, which can cause rotting of plants. Mechanical composition, moisture capacity, microbial composition, soil acidity, soil fertility.

Useful Tips
On warm, well-lit windows, plants such as fuchsia and pelargonium continue to bloom almost until the New Year. If you are sorry to cut off their branches with flowers, then the plants can be placed in the brightest, coolest room at a temperature of 10 degrees, and also greatly reduce watering.

Top dressing of indoor plants in winter
Everyone knows that with the onset of cold weather, plants retire. There are species that stop blooming, some stop growing.

When using garlic preparations for plant protection, gardeners should remember that the expected effect will not be as strong as the effect of chemicals. Therefore, you should not delay with prophylactic or medicinal spraying. You do not need to wait until the disease or pests densely occupy the plantings, but you need to start acting at the first signs of damage.

If the gardener does not have the time or opportunity to prepare garlic blanks on his own, it is recommended to purchase ready-made preparations. Garlic-based ecological plant protection products are convenient and safe, so you can safely use them both in the home and in the garden (for example, preparations "BIOCHRON", "BIOCZOS"). The liquid should be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

There are also preparations on the market with garlic for disinfection of tools and planting containers used in gardening (for example, TARGET or HIMAL, and also potash garden soap with garlic).

Master-Agro for indoor and garden roses, 25 g

Master-Agro for indoor and garden roses, 25 g

Master-Agro for indoor and garden roses (25 g) is an effective water-soluble, chlorine-free complex fertilizer with microelements in the form of chelates. It is used for root dressing, when growing various types of roses.

Fertilizer composition:
nitrogen (N) - 16%, phosphorus (P2O5) - 18%, potassium (K2O) - 24%, MgO - 0.5%, B, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, Mo.

- Plants absorb microelements in a chelated form much better by 90%, in contrast to ordinary microelements, which are absorbed by a plant only by 30-40%.
- The balanced ratio of micro and macronutrients satisfies all plant nutrient needs, increases the number of buds, stimulates active and long-term flowering, promotes the color intensity of flowers and leaves, increases the level of resistance to diseases and rot.
- Has low consumption rates and relatively low cost.
Consumption of the drug 5 g (1 teaspoon) dissolve in 2 liters of water and water the plants under the root. It is necessary to water once every 12-15 days, during the growing season of plants.
To obtain a greater effect, it is recommended to alternate plant feeding with the organic-mineral fertilizer "Rost".
Precautions: use rubber gloves when preparing the solution. After the robots, wash your face and hands with soap and water. Store fertilizer in a cool, dry place, away from food and medicine, out of the reach of children and pets.

Selection of mulch by type of plant

Each houseplant requires individual care, selection of conditions and substrate. And it is precisely on the features of each individual type that you need to focus when looking for the ideal type of mulch.

Finding a suitable option from dozens of available ones is not at all difficult: it is enough to take into account the preferred reaction of the soil and limit the available materials to a list of those additives that are used for the plant substrate or to create drainage at the bottom of the tank.

To choose the type of mulch for the plant, it is enough:

  1. Check what kind of soil and drainage the plant prefers. Crops that love acidic soil will thrive with mulch materials that keep the pH stable or slightly acidify the soil. For crops that prefer calcareous soils, options are limited to neutral inert or loosening additives and crushed stone that enhances alkaline reactions.
  2. Choose which plant needs the effect of mulch - preventing waterlogging of the soil, the role of upper drainage, or, conversely, stabilization - creating a light or medium constant soil moisture.
  3. Think about the decorative characteristics - texture, color, the impact on the perception of plants and the interior.

So, for example, for indoor hydrangeas and rhododendrons, and for camellias too, the best mulch option is chopped pine needles or peat. All cacti grow best with fine stone chips, pebbles, or coarse sand mulch. These same materials are best used to create a thin layer above the substrate around the rosettes of violets and all types of fat women.

Decorative chips from the bark of non-coniferous species, like agroperlite, vermiculite, expanded clay, coconut mulch are suitable for all types of indoor plants without special soil requirements, including for indoor lianas, pelargoniums, hibiscus, fruit trees, ficuses, etc.

Before using any mulch, you need to make sure that it is safe, clean, disinfected, free of toxins and other harmful substances. And also to exclude the creation of a water and airtight barrier (for example, some types of sisal and other natural materials can have this effect).

You need to be guided by the characteristics of each individual plant when looking for the ideal type of mulch. © Debra Lee Baldwin

Dangerous poisonous indoor plants

It is worth starting with the fact that a burn with the poisonous juice of a home plant is not a disaster, the horror will come when the poison somehow (you never know) gets inside! Typically, this is a strong and dangerous poisoning, and the worst option is a lethal outcome! Well, have we convinced you to revise your indoor plants? Then let's read their names, even in alphabetical order.

Akalifa... Or fox tail flowers - a poisonous houseplant with incredible decorative effect. Nevertheless, work with this plant should be carried out exclusively with gloves, and children and cats should not be allowed to visit it at all. And what a beauty this Akalifa is, eh!

Alocasia... These luxurious leaves of room alocasia in humid weather emit seemingly harmless droplets of juice, however, attention, it is poisonous! Do not try, do not touch with bare hands. You are guaranteed burns. In addition, in most species of alocasia, rhizomes are poisonous, so it is cautious when transplanting a plant.

Anthurium. Another name for a poisonous indoor plant, by the way, very common in our homes. The roots and sap of anthurium are poisonous, it does not emit fumes. Be careful when transplanting a plant, and do not let the juice get on the mucous membrane - irritation is provided, sometimes poisoning, but it can be stopped by washing the mucous membrane of the mouth and stomach.

Datura. These lovely bell-shaped terry skirts have a different name - dope! Does this name tell you something? The legendary poisonous folk remedy for a long time is Crazy Potion. So, indoor datura is harmless in growing, if you do not eat it, the leaves and stems of the plant contain atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine, which act as a drug that intoxicates the mind and depressing the parasympathetic nerves. Due to the similar properties of this poisonous plant, it is successfully used in medicine.

Dieffenbachia... This lovely decorative leafy representative of the flora with impressive size is also called a poisonous houseplant. Allergy sufferers are not recommended to keep diffebachia in the house. Its juice upon contact with the skin causes an allergic reaction, edema and irritation may begin. In addition, this does not even happen immediately, but after a while. So, when working with dieffenbachia, be sure to use gloves.

Caladium. The juice of all parts of the indoor caladium is poisonous, it causes severe allergies, if there are children in the house, remove the luxurious huge leaves of this handsome man away.

Lily. How many varieties of home lilies do breeders from different countries offer today? Many, and many more. Here, the toxicity is somewhat more dangerous, the aroma of lilies can be very strong, and cause dizziness, headache, allergies and even fainting. On animals, the poison of lilies does not act immediately, but half an hour or an hour after the approbation of its leaves or flowers, when they reach the stomach. Vomiting will begin, kidneys will fail, and death will come.

There is no antidote for lilies! Therefore, dear florist, it is better not to risk the health of your pets, and even more so curious babies.

Monstera... It seems that all flower growers already know that monstera is poisonous, but still we recall that it is the leaves of the monstera that are poisonous. Although there is no milkman in them, the thin needles of the intercellular spaces do their job! When in contact with the mucous membrane, they cause a strong burning sensation. By the way, the Latin concept of monstera is translated as a monster! Quite relevant, isn't it?

Oleander... Delicate flowers with irregular petals are quite beautiful, but they and other parts of the oleander are poisonous, observe all safety measures when working with the plant.

Nightshade... indoor nightshade, although it is used in folk medicine, is very poisonous, so if you are suddenly fond of folk remedies for treating a particular disease, be careful with nightshade - this is the name of a poisonous indoor plant. It causes convulsions, paralysis and even death.

Mexican pepper. The green mass of Mexican pepper is very poisonous, it is recommended to work with the plant only with protective gloves, and after contact with this original annual, wash your hands thoroughly.

Syngonium. If syngonium juice gets on the skin or mucous membranes, expect a burn or even poisoning! If the juice suddenly gets in the wrong place, immediately rinse the parts of the body with running water and again with running water and soap.

Philodendron... This parasitic vine, like most of its family called aroids, is also poisonous, but it has already firmly settled in our garden centers and home flower shops. Be careful, philodendron juice is poisonous.

These, of course, are not all the names of poisonous indoor plants, there are many more. We advise you to pay attention to the kutrovy family, which includes such representatives of the green inhabitants of the house as:

  • Adenium - succulent, also called a desert rose.
  • Allamanda - named even in honor of the professor, a newcomer from tropical Africa, very capricious in her care, in general, a whole exotic.
  • Beaumonta - an evergreen liana from the Himalayas, which is afraid of the good old spider mite.
  • Diplomas - either Mandeville, also very popular in our homes, capricious and poisonous.
  • Karissa - this is a house plant, an almost undemanding African resident who is ready to prick his owner with his cute thorns.
  • Katarantus - so to speak, the Magadaskar periwinkle, which has taken root in Russian interiors, is also very poisonous.
  • Pachypodium - this handsome man on a blown leg is a real cactus, poisonous, but very attractive in his circle.
  • Plumeria - the delicate but strong flowering of this plant is charming, bears the name of a French botanist, be careful with this deceiver.
  • Strophantus - secretes cardiac glycosides and is successfully used in medicine, but not everything is so simple, strophantus can be dangerous.
  • Tabernemontana - a poisonous houseplant has another name - ervatamia. Loves haircuts, something like a gardenia.

In addition, the names of poisonous indoor plants are a good part of the aroid family. The most "brutal" representatives were described above, but let's remember a couple more:

  • Aglaonema - a not very distant cousin of Dieffenbachia from the same family, has not yet very firmly established itself in our apartments, but nevertheless, beware of aglaonema.
  • Arisema - in general, this is a garden or even a wild plant, but who manages to plant it in the house is not worth it.
  • Zamioculcas - this African uncle is a resident of many houses, he is loved for his unpretentiousness and very decorative appearance.
  • Zantedeschia - simply put - calla. And today they are grown in the house.
  • Taro - differs from poisonous alocasia only in the color of the leaves, but still the same large and beautiful.
  • Sauromatum - it is also grown in pots, but few people dare to bring it into the house, since the rotten stench that attracts pollinators is still there! Also write this name in poisonous houseplants.
  • Spathiphyllum - this evergreen handsome man is already sold everywhere in our country. Be careful, spathiphyllum is also poisonous.
  • Scindapsus - a cute liana, which looks like a philodendron from the same family.

And one more family - Aralievs, where there are a lot of poisonous green residents, with whom you need to be careful. For example:

  • Aukuba JapaneseI - has beautiful foliage and is not finicky.
  • Polisias - ornamental leafy representative from the Pacific Islands.
  • Fatsia - a plant for almost cave conditions, tolerates shade and is very unpretentious, looks like a pretty tree, but is poisonous.
  • Fatshedera - hybrid of Fatsia and Aralia, born in 1912. Unpretentious ivy.
  • Scheffler - another name for a poisonous houseplant. Bears the name of a German botanist according to some sources, according to others - Polish.

That's all, the list of poisonous indoor plants is again far from complete, but already wide enough to be prudent in home floriculture. You can see photos of these plants by following the links to individual articles about each specimen.
